Reckless Driving Traffic Stop Leads to DUI and Drug Arrests

ALLIANCE, Ne: On Monday, October 19, 2026, at approximately 4:47 p.m., Alliance Police Sergeant David LaDuke observed a red Hyundai Elantra traveling at an extremely high rate of speed near 25th Street and Flack Avenue. The vehicle was being operated so recklessly that it nearly overturned.

Sergeant LaDuke initiated a traffic stop and observed occupants throwing items from the vehicle. During the initial investigation, the passenger failed to comply with commands to exit the vehicle, prompting additional officers to respond.

Officers secured both occupants and initiated a driving under the influence investigation. The driver provided a preliminary breath sample indicating a blood alcohol concentration of 0.265, more than three times Nebraska's legal limit of 0.08.

During the investigation, officers also recovered approximately five grams of suspected methamphetamine and ma*****na.

The driver (pictured), Arlo Standing Bear (N/M, DOB: 08/27/1996), of Allen, South Dakota, was arrested on allegations of:

- Driving Under the Influence (BAC 0.15 or greater)
- Willful Reckless Driving
- Refusal to Submit to a Chemical Test
- Tampering with Physical Evidence
- Possession of Methamphetamine
- Stop Sign Violation
- Possession of Ma*****na

The passenger, Jeremiah Arthur Hopkins (N/M, DOB: 08/23/1997), of Kyle, South Dakota, was arrested on allegations of:

- Possession of Methamphetamine
- Littering
- Tampering with Physical Evidence

Hopkins was subsequently cited and released after the detention facility declined to accept him.

Alliance Police Officer Michael Gomez and Box Butte County Sheriff's Deputy Mike DeCore assisted Sergeant LaDuke during the investigation. The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Alliance Police Chief David Leavitt emphasized the serious public safety implications of the incident.

“Reckless and impaired driving pose a serious threat to public safety, and we will not tolerate conduct that puts innocent people at risk. This incident underscores the importance of proactive enforcement and the need to hold those who endanger our community accountable. I commend Sergeant LaDuke, Officer Gomez, and Deputy DeCore for their actions and coordinated response.”

The Alliance Police Department remains committed to removing impaired drivers from the roadways, combating illegal drug activity, and protecting the safety of the community.

Fatal Motorcycle Collision Followed by Separate Vehicle Crash Into Local Business

ALLIANCE, Neb. — Emergency responders were dispatched to two serious motor vehicle crashes Sunday afternoon, October 11, including a fatal motorcycle collision and a subsequent crash involving a vehicle striking a local business.

At approximately 1:35 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the intersection of U.S. Highway 385 and West Third Street following a collision involving a passenger vehicle and a motorcycle.

Preliminary information indicates that a passenger vehicle traveling southbound on Highway 385 attempted to turn east onto West Third Street, crossing into the path of an oncoming motorcycle. The motorcycle operator, a 17-year-old juvenile, sustained fatal injuries.

The collision is being investigated by the Box Butte County Sheriff's Office and Nebraska State Patrol. Alliance Police Department personnel and Alliance Fire Department emergency responders assisted at the scene.

Approximately ten minutes later, at 1:44 p.m., Alliance Police Department dispatchers received a separate report of a vehicle that had crashed into Bruce Furniture, located at 1508 West Third Street.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver had recently passed the scene of the fatal motorcycle collision and became emotionally distressed by what he witnessed. The driver subsequently experienced an apparent loss of consciousness while traveling eastbound on West Third Street, causing his vehicle to leave the roadway and strike the business.

The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. The collision also caused damage to the building.

The Alliance Police Department is investigating the crash at Bruce Furniture. The circumstances surrounding the driver's reported loss of consciousness remain under investigation.

Both incidents required a coordinated response from law enforcement, fire, emergency medical services, and other responding personnel.

The Alliance Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young motorcyclist who lost his life. We also recognize the significant emotional impact that traumatic incidents can have on witnesses, bystanders, emergency responders, and the broader community.

Both incidents remain under investigation, and as of the time of this release, no charges have been filed. No further information will be released at this time.

Media inquiries regarding the fatal motorcycle collision should be directed to the Box Butte County Sheriff's Office or Nebraska State Patrol.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Alliance Police Chief David Leavitt Announces $600,000 Federal Grant for Public Safety Communications Infrastructure

ALLIANCE, Neb. — Alliance Police Chief David Leavitt announced that the Alliance Police Department has officially accepted a $600,000 federal technology grant that will fund the majority of a major upgrade to public safety communications infrastructure serving Alliance and Box Butte County.

The funding will support the development of a new radio repeater site designed to improve access to Nebraska’s statewide public safety radio network and strengthen communications for first responders throughout the area.

“This is a critically important investment in the reliability and resiliency of our public safety communications system,” Chief Leavitt said. “Reliable radio communication is not optional in emergency services. Our police officers, sheriff’s deputies, firefighters, paramedics, dispatchers and other first responders must be able to communicate seamlessly, especially during major incidents or emergencies.”

The project will benefit not only the Alliance Police Department, but also the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office, Alliance Fire Department and other public safety agencies operating throughout the area.

Currently, local responders rely heavily on AT&T FirstNet connectivity to access portions of the statewide radio system. While FirstNet has provided an important communications capability, the addition of dedicated repeater infrastructure will significantly strengthen the system by providing a more direct and reliable connection to the statewide network.

Once the new repeater is operational, FirstNet will remain an important part of the overall communications system, but will primarily serve as a backup and supplemental option during infrastructure failures or in fringe coverage areas.

“The goal is redundancy,” Leavitt said. “We do not want our emergency communications dependent on a single pathway. Dedicated radio infrastructure gives our first responders a stronger primary system while allowing FirstNet to provide an additional layer of resiliency when needed.”

The $600,000 federal award will cover the majority of the project cost. The City and its public safety partners are awaiting a decision on an additional grant application and will also explore the appropriate use of 911 funds to help cover the remaining project balance.

The project represents a significant step toward modernizing public safety communications throughout Box Butte County and addressing long-standing coverage and infrastructure needs.

“When an officer is calling for assistance, a firefighter is coordinating operations at a major incident, or dispatchers are managing multiple emergency responses, dependable communications can directly affect safety and the outcome of an incident,” Leavitt said. “This project gives our responders the dedicated infrastructure they need and provides greater confidence that the system will be there when they need it most.”

Additional information regarding the project timeline, construction and implementation will be released as the project moves forward.
