Scam alert! Please take a minute to read this important information from the Alton Police Department about a new scam to watch out for.

๐Ÿšจ SCAM NOTICE โ€” PLEASE BE AWARE ๐Ÿšจ

Several Alton residents have recently received very convincing emails requesting payment for City of Alton services.

The latest scam involved a fraudulent request for nearly $5,000 for a Building & Zoning permit. What makes this scam particularly concerning is the level of detail included in the message.

The fraudulent email correctly identified:
โ€ข The Plan Commission application number
โ€ข The property address
โ€ข The type of permit requested
โ€ข The City staff member who would typically handle the request

The email appeared legitimate and was designed to look like it came directly from a City of Alton employee.

Please take a moment to protect yourself. Scammers are using increasingly sophisticated methods, including information gathered about specific properties and applications, to make fraudulent requests appear legitimate.

Remember, the City of Alton will NOT request payments by phone, cryptocurrency, or through third-party websites that do not use the exact domain bsaonline.com.

If you receive a payment request and arenโ€™t sure whether itโ€™s legitimate, donโ€™t send money or click any links. Contact the City directly at 618-463-3500 to verify the request.

When in doubt, verify before you pay. ๐Ÿ›‘
