The Potter County Sheriff’s Office is urging the public to use extreme caution if planning to travel to or recreate near the Canadian River following recent and extended rainfall throughout the area.
Current conditions have resulted in significantly elevated water levels and extensive flooding along the Canadian River. Areas that may normally be accessible may now be flooded, unstable, or otherwise unsafe.
Of particular concern, the Potter County Sheriff’s Office wants the public to understand that our ability to conduct rescue operations in the Canadian River area will be limited due to available equipment and the amount and movement of water currently present.
Anyone entering the area should understand that doing so could place both themselves and emergency responders in significant danger.
ROSlTA FLATS CLOSURE
The National Park Service has advised that the Rosita Flats portion of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area will be closed until further notice due to current conditions. Members of the public are asked to respect the closure and remain out of the affected area.
The Potter County Sheriff’s Office strongly encourages the public to:
• Avoid entering flooded areas or areas with rapidly moving water.
• Respect all closures and posted warnings.
• Do not attempt to cross flooded roads, trails, or waterways.
• Consider postponing recreational activities in and around the Canadian River until conditions improve.
• Do not underestimate the power and unpredictability of floodwater.

The Potter County Sheriff’s Office will continue monitoring conditions and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
If you encounter an emergency, call 911.
Please make the safe decision. Stay out of the water and allow emergency personnel to remain focused on those who truly need assistance.

We have seen some posts about people intending on closing streets in neighborhoods in Potter County.

FYI, that is a criminal offense if it is a county road. If you do it and it impedes our emergency response, it could be a felony. Please don't attempt to close and public roadways. Here is the applicable statute
