Students at our Big Picture program at Ready Academy have been hard at work learning some unique skills from the Buffalo Maritime Center. We’re proud to see our them gaining hands-on experience, building new skills, and helping bring a piece of Buffalo’s maritime history back to life! What a great example of learning beyond the classroom and making a meaningful impact in our community.

By Greg Dudley, Boatbuilding Programs Director, Buffalo Maritime Center

Each school year, the Buffalo Maritime Center (BMC) invites students into the shop to learn life lessons and STEM principles through wooden boatbuilding. This year, we’ve created an exciting new initiative to add to our in-school boatbuilding programs.

Our annual Maplemere Community Walk is a wonderful opportunity for our teachers and staff to connect with families right at their doorsteps. This year, they also shared information about our upcoming Capital Improvement Project, with work at Maplemere set to begin this spring!

There will be two opportunities this fall for our school community to learn more about the project. Please join us for the MM PTA meeting on November 2 at 6:00 PM , and/or our traveling Board of Education Meeting held at Maplemere on November 17 at 6:00 PM.

Thank you to our dedicated Maplemere champions for spending time connecting in our community!

We’re proud of Sweet Home Middle School Principal Stephen Shepherd for representing Sweet Home at the University at Buffalo’s Rise, Respond and Rebuild Conference: Healing Communities by Ending Gun Violence.

Mr. Shepherd participated in the panel “Imagining a Childhood Without Fi***rm Violence,” bringing an important educational perspective to the conversation about creating safer, healthier environments for children and families.

We’re excited to kick off a new program that gives our Panthers the opportunity to discover a different fruit or vegetable each month. Students get to taste something new, learn a little about it, and find fun ways to enjoy it!

Our first featured food was a hit, with students tasting, exploring and learning alongside our food service team. It’s a fun way to encourage healthy eating habits, build nutrition knowledge and help our students feel more comfortable trying new foods.

A big thank-you to our food service staff for making this opportunity possible and bringing healthy choices to life for our students!

We can’t wait to see what’s on the menu next! 🌱
