๐ง PLEASE HELP US CONSERVE WATER ๐ง
The Town of Amherst is asking all water customers to voluntarily conserve water until drought conditions improve. Our water quality remains excellent, there is no risk of service interruptions, and the system is operating normally.
Due to an extended period of low rainfall, the Town's water source, the Buffalo River is running lower than normal. The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the agency that
regulates water withdrawals in the state, requires that the Town use no more than 25% of the daily flow in the Buffalo. As river flows continue to decline, every gallon withdrawn has a greater impact on fish, wildlife, and the overall health of the river. Remaining within our DEQ permit limit helps protect this important natural resource while avoiding unnecessary compliance costs for our customers.
Voluntary measures now can help us all prevent mandatory ones later.
Here are a few easy ways to help:
๐ฆ Limit outdoor watering to the lowest amount possible, and during times of cooler temperatures limit evaporation (between 10 pm and 7 am)
๐ฐ Fix leaking faucets and running toilets (they use more water than you think!)
๐ฟConsider water saving devices such as faucets, shower heads and toilets.
๐ชฅ Turn off your faucets when you are not actively using water. Things like turning the faucet off while you brush your teeth or soap up in a shower can save a lot!
๐งน Sweep driveways and sidewalks instead of using a hose
๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ Most of all, just try to think before you use water and encourage members of your household to do so as well. If we can all save a little, it adds up and allows us to meet our needs longer without having to impose rules on everyone.

We're doing our part, too. Town staff are working with the Garden Club to use non-potable water from our treatment process to water flowers and landscaping throughout Town. It may not save a large amount of water, but every gallon counts. We're committed to keeping Amherst beautiful while conserving water alongside our residents and businesses.
