OCCCO PICO It all started with two Jesuits in Oakland. After a few years, their model morphed from neighborhood to faith-based organizing, working with congregations.

Orange County Congregation Community Organization (OCCCO) is a multi-faith, faith-based community organization that works to empower individuals and congregations to use their voice to make positive, lasting change within low-income communities of color. Inspired by their faith, along with a deep commitment to social justice, Fathers John Baumann and Jerry Helfrich started an organization called PICO in Northern California that adopted a neighborhood organizing focus. PICO and its affiliates operate within a congregation-based model of organizing.

Why I vote? Because every student deserves a school where they belong, fully and without conditions. 🗳✨

Our OCCCO Youth Leaders are showing up for Belonging-First Schools this election season, because the fight for unconditional belonging starts in the classroom and the community that surrounds it. These young leaders know their voices matter, and they’re using them.

---------------------

On September 29, OCCCO Executive Director Miguel Hernandez spoke before Mayor Aitken and the Anaheim City Council.

The allegations are serious: repeated anti-Mexican language toward her chief of staff, Berenice Ballinas, and unwelcome comments about her perceived sexual orientation.

Mayor Aitken deserves a fair investigation. Ms. Ballinas deserves to be heard, treated with dignity, and protected from retaliation.

Unconditional belonging does not mean unconditional approval. We’re calling for an independent investigation, protection from retaliation, a clear timeline, and public findings.

Private dialogue cannot replace public accountability.

We belong, as our whole selves. Without conditions. 🌻

Last month, the UBLONG Community of Practice gathered at the Delhi Center for Session 2, bringing together leaders across diverse sectors working to advance justice for our immigrant and refugee communities in Orange County.

Together we dug into strategic narrative and the Unconditional Belonging framework, and what it takes to make belonging felt, heard, and seen, not just spoken about. We were moved by the engagement and excitement everyone brought into the space.

Huge thank you to our partners who co-lead this work alongside us: Orange County Communities for Responsible Development (OCCORD), Kennedy Commission, Ahri Center, and the Othering & Belonging Institute at UC Berkeley.

We look forward to continuing the conversation on what a Community of Practice grounded in Unconditional Belonging as a narrative strategy can look like here in Orange County. We’re planning our next gathering this fall and hope to see everyone again soon. 💛

Pertenecemos, como nuestro ser completo. Sin condiciones. 🌻

Fullerton has 19 Flock license plate cameras on our streets, and the City Council will take this up on Tuesday, Oct. 6. 📍

Cities across California are rethinking these cameras. Mountain View ended its Flock contract after learning federal agencies had accessed local data. Oxnard turned off its cameras after an audit found outside agencies searching them. Costa Mesa kept its cameras but is demanding stronger protections, and Santa Ana is reviewing its contract. Nationwide, more than 200 cities have dropped Flock this year.

Now it's Fullerton's turn, and our community deserves a voice in the decision. 🗣️

Join OCCCO on Monday, Oct. 5 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM on Zoom. We'll talk through what these cameras mean for our families and neighbors, and prepare public comments together so we arrive at City Hall ready to speak.

📅 Zoom forum: Mon. Oct. 5, 6:00–7:30 PM
🏛️ City Council: Tues. Oct. 6, 5:30 PM, Fullerton City Hall
