Thank you to everyone who came out to support our community’s youth at the 9th Annual !

Anaheim Confidential is a community fundraiser organized by APD’s Youth Engagement Detail, Homicide Detail, and Cops-4-Kids (C4K). Proceeds support C4K’s programs benefitting local youth, with a portion also benefiting the OC Homicide Investigator’s Association (OCHIA), which supports victims of violent crimes and their families.

This year’s presentation revisited the tragic 2020 murder of Jose DeJesus Berrelleza-Ibarra, a devoted husband and father who was killed while attempting to stop the theft of his work can in Anaheim. Homicide Sergeant Smith, who was the lead detective on the case, walked attendees through the investigation that brought those responsible to justice. We are especially grateful to Jose’s family for allowing us to share his story.

Just like our detectives rely on teamwork and collaboration to solve cases, Anaheim Confidential takes a tremendous team effort to bring to life each year. We thank our APD Explorers, Cadets, Volunteers, donors, Traffic Control Assistants, sworn and professional staff, River Church, and everyone who worked behind the scenes to bring this event together.

Special thanks to the local restaurants, breweries, and businesses who generously donated their food, beverages, time, and resources to support this fundraiser. Your generosity helps make this event possible!

Next tear marks 10 years of Anaheim Confidential. We can’t wait to celebrate this milestone with you in 2027!

Automated License Plate Reader/Recognition (ALPR) is an important investigative tool that helps the Anaheim Police Department locate missing people, investigate serious crimes, recover stolen vehicles, and protect the Anaheim community. Its responsible use requires independent verification, lawful enforcement decisions, clear rules for data access and retention, and safeguards against misuse.

We recognize the importance of providing clear, accurate information about how this technology works, its limitations, and the safeguards in place to protect individual privacy.

An excerpt from Chief of Police Manny Cid’s message regarding ALPRs:

“As Chief of Police, I believe ALPR technology can play an important role in protecting our residents, businesses, and visitors. At the same time, public trust depends on transparency, accountability, and clear safeguards governing how this technology is used. The Anaheim Police Department will continue to advocate for the responsible use of ALPR technology, ensure compliance with applicable laws and department policies, and engage with our community and policymakers to support appropriate safeguards that protect the privacy and civil liberties of all individuals.”

Further explore the myths and facts and learn more about ALPR technology in Anaheim at AnaheimPD.org.

The Anaheim Police Department recognizes the importance of keeping our community informed about the criminal investigation and administrative review processes related to the December 6, 2025, officer involved shooting involving Albert Arzola.

Officer-involved shootings undergo multiple investigative and administrative reviews, each serving a distinct purpose. Some reviews depend on findings from external investigations. Each process takes time to complete, as they require a thorough and careful examination of the facts and evidence. The Orange County District Attorney’s Office investigation remains ongoing, and its findings are pending.

We are committed to preserving trust through transparency. By providing this update, we aim to keep our community informed and strengthen the relationship between our department and the people we serve.

Our commitment to seeking justice never stops. More than 14 years after 80-year old Il Jae Kim was found murdered in his Anaheim apartment, Anaheim Police Homicide Detectives have made an arrest.

On December 15, 2011, officers responded to Il Jae Kim’s apartment for a welfare check to find him deceased. Despite an extensive investigation, the case remained unsolved.

In March 2026, APD Homicide Detectives partnered with the OC Crime Lab to reexamine evidence from the original investigation. Advances in forensic DNA technology helped investigators identify 34-year-old Mike Nunez as a suspect.

On October 6, 2026, detectives arrested Nunez in Santa Ana. The OC District Attorney’s Office has charged him with murder.

A cold case is not a forgotten case. This breakthrough reflects the persistence of our Homicide Detectives and the critical role of forensic science and technology pursuing justice, no matter how long it takes.

This investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact Anaheim PD at (714) 321-3669 or submit an anonymous tip to OC Crime Stoppers at (855) TIP-OCCS.

Thank you to everyone who braved the heat and joined us Saturday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Orange County Family Justice Center Foundation!

For two decades, the OCFJC has been a place where victims and families impacted by domestic violence, child abuse, sexual assault, and elder abuse can access law enforcement, advocacy, support, and resources under one roof.

This milestone reminds us of why this work matters and the impact that can be made when community partners work together to support victims and families.

A special thank you to our community partners who support Saturday’s celebration, along with the OCFJC Foundation Board and Anaheim PD personnel who dedicated their time and effort to make this event possible!

Here’s to working together for many years to come!

APD’s Bicycle Unit was back at it this week! During a 5 hour deployment along Beach Blvd on Thursday night, officers made 7 arrests while they conducted proactive enforcement and addressed community concerns related to prostitution, drugs, loitering, homeless-related issues. Beach Blvd continues to be an area of focus for Anaheim PD and our City partners.
