AEA was honored to host U.S. Department of Energy Deputy Secretary James P. Danly, Gov. Mike Dunleavy, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, and Rep. Nick Begich today as they highlighted Alaska's $32.8 million award through the DOE's Grid Resilience State and Tribal Formula Grants Program.

Alaska's allocation is the third largest in the country, behind only California and Texas, and will support projects that strengthen energy infrastructure and improve system resilience across the state.

We also recognize Clay Koplin, CEO designee of Matanuska Electric Association; Travis Million, president and CEO of Golden Valley Electric Assn.; and Robert Siedman, CEO of the Southeast Alaska Power Agency, who joined us today and whose organizations received funding through earlier rounds of program. We appreciate their participation, along with our federal, state, utility, and industry partners.

AEA is seeking qualified suppliers and installers to support the next phase of the Cook Inlet PowerLink project through a newly released Prequalification and Request for Information package.

The proposed project includes a 40-mile submarine cable crossing between the Beluga area and the Kenai Peninsula, that would establish Alaska's first high-voltage direct current, or HVDC, transmission connection across Cook Inlet.

AEA received 42 applications requesting $84.5 million through the Renewable Energy Fund (REF) program. Applicants proposed an additional $476.3 million in matching funds, representing potential project investment across Alaska if projects advance through the evaluation process and receive funding.

Since 2008, REF-supported projects have displaced approximately 120 million gallons of diesel fuel, representing about $600 million in avoided fuel costs at the fiscal year 2025 Power Cost Equalization rate.

Applications now enter AEA's four-stage evaluation process. Eligible projects undergo reviews for eligibility, technical and economic feasibility, scoring, and regional balance before funding recommendations are developed.

๐Ÿ”จ Interested in the Bradley Lake Expansion Project? Future-you may appreciate a little advance notice.

Join AEA's virtual industry day on Wednesday, Oct. 21, from 8 a.m. to noon Alaska time to learn about anticipated project scope, site logistics, and potential procurement timelines.

The session is designed to help interested contractors plan ahead and be ready when future bidding opportunities become available.

RSVP to Ryan McLaughlin at [email protected] to receive the meeting link.

Because the best time to start preparing for a major project is before the bid package arrives.

: Reliable energy requires immediate planning and long-term investment.

AEA works with utilities and partners across the Railbelt to strengthen reliability and expand energy options for Alaskans. Through projects such as transmission upgrades and the Bradley Lake Expansion Project, AEA and its partners are investing in infrastructure that will support the region's energy needs for decades to come.

This recent Alaska's News Source interview provides additional context on current Railbelt energy challenges and the work underway to build a more resilient energy system.

About 80% of Southcentral electricity comes from natural gas. With long-term hydro upgrades years away and global conflicts driving up diesel costs, officials warn a prolonged freeze could force residents to dial back the heat.
