Happy Alaska Day! 🏔️

On October 18, 1867, Alaska was formally transferred from Russia to the United States in Sitka. Today marks 159 years since that historic moment.

But Alaska's story began long before 1867. For thousands of years, Alaska Native peoples have lived on this land, relying on its resources and traditions of harvesting, preserving, and sharing food.

When Food Bank of Alaska was founded, our original motto was "Cache and Share," inspired by a practice deeply rooted in Alaska's history.

While much has changed over the years, that belief in looking out for our neighbors continues to guide our work today.

We're proud to serve communities across this remarkable state and grateful for the Alaskans who continue its tradition of sharing what we have.

Happy Alaska Day from Food Bank of Alaska! 🤎

What a wonderful evening at the Mayor’s Charity Ball last weekend.

We’re grateful to the Mayor’s Charity Ball for selecting Food Bank of Alaska as one of this year’s benefiting nonprofits, and to the generous in-kind donors who contributed auction items and helped make the evening such a success.

A special thank you to our staff who worked behind the scenes to bring everything together, and to everyone who attended, bid, donated, and supported the event. ❤️

Because of you, we can continue helping families across Alaska access the food they need, while strengthening the network of community partners working to improve food security throughout our state.

Thank you for showing up for our mission and for our neighbors.

A volunteer from Wells Fargo joined Food Bank of Alaska staff for a recent senior box build, helping pack boxes of nutritious food for older Alaskans.

Senior box builds are a regular part of the work happening in our warehouse each month, bringing staff and volunteers side by side to help make sure food gets where it needs to go.

Thanks to Wells Fargo for lending a hand! 🤎

It’s the final day of Food Waste Prevention Week! 🥕♻️

This year’s theme, Food Heroes in Your Neighborhood, celebrates the everyday habits that help keep good food from going to waste.

We’re especially into this year’s Food Heroes, illustrated by Alaska artist Robert Schrooten for Food Waste Prevention Week. 🤎

Maybe you’re:

🐻 The Ripeness Ranger, who knows exactly how and where produce ripens
🐿️ The Cart Strategist, who buys only what they’ll actually use
🦊 The Fridge Remix Artist, turning leftovers into tomorrow’s meal
🐱 The Sniff Sleuth, trusting their senses over the expiration date
🐝 The Crisper Whisperer, storing food so it lasts
🐹 The Just-Enough Genius, cooking the right amount

At Food Bank of Alaska, preventing food waste is part of our work every day. Keeping good food in the food system means more of it can reach people instead of going to waste.

So, before Food Waste Prevention Week wraps up, which Food Hero are you? And which one are you absolutely not? 🤣
