We hope you were able to participate in the Great Alaska ShakeOut this morning! If you missed it, don't worry—you can organize a "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" drill anytime for your family or workplace.

Small earthquakes are actually the perfect time to practice. These minor shakes serve as real-time practice runs to build muscle memory. When we train ourselves, our families, and our coworkers to react automatically, we can stay calm and act quickly when a larger earthquake hits.

Want a reminder for next year? Head over to shakeout.org/alaska to register and stay prepared!

DROP to the ground on your hands and knees.

COVER under a sturdy table or desk (or protect your head and neck with your arms).

HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops.

Alaska is true earthquake country—we experience more earthquakes than the rest of the U.S. combined, including the massive 1964 Good Friday Earthquake (the 2nd largest ever recorded!).

The best way to protect yourself and your family is to practice! Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:15 AM.

FEMA to Conduct Alaska Emergency Alert
System Pre-Test on October 7

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will conduct a statewide Emergency
Alert System (EAS) test in Alaska on Wednesday, October 7, 2026. This statewide test will
help FEMA identify technical or procedural issues before the nationwide EAS test scheduled
for November 17, 2026.

What to Expect

The Alaska only test on Oct. 7, will be similar to the regular monthly EAS test but will announce the test a national EAS system not an Alaska EAS test.

On Wednesday, October 7, at approximately 10:20 a.m. AKDT, normal radio and television programming in Alaska
will be briefly interrupted to relay a test message. The interruption is expected to last about one minute. The
message will state that it is only a test and that no action is required by the public. The Alaska pre-test will not
include Wireless Emergency Alerts sent to cellular phones.

Why Alaska Was Selected
Alaska has a mix of urban, remote, and wilderness areas, allowing FEMA to assess signal reception across varied
terrain in one state. Additionally, its geographic separation from other states reduces the chance that the test
signals will reach neighboring states.
About the 2026 Nationwide Test

The nationwide EAS test scheduled for November 17, 2026, will evaluate the readiness and effectiveness of the
infrastructure used to distribute a national emergency message. FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System
Division will originate the test message and participating broadcasters and other communications providers will
relay it to the public through radio and television broadcasts nationwide. For additional information, visit FEMA’s web
page for Frequently Asked Questions about the Nationwide Emergency Alert System Test.

🐾 Is Your Pet Ready for an Emergency? 🐾

Our pets rely on us to keep them safe—especially during an emergency. As you build your emergency kit and make your family’s preparedness plan, don’t forget your four-legged family members! 🐶🐱

Make sure your pet’s emergency kit includes:
🐾 Food and water
💊 Medications
🦮 Leash, collar, and harness
📋 Veterinary and vaccination records
🏠 A crate or carrier
🧸 Comfort items
📸 A current photo of your pet

And remember: Always have a backup pet sitter or shelter in mind. Never assume an emergency shelter or hotel will accept pets.

A few minutes of planning now can make a big difference when an emergency happens. Prepare for every member of your family—including the furry ones! ❤️

❄️ HEAR YE, HEAR YE… WINTER IS COMING. ❄️

The roads will be icy,
The temperatures will drop,
The daylight will vanish
Before you’re ready to stop.

And somewhere out there,
Someone will exclaim:
“I should’ve put an emergency kit in my car…
before winter became the game!” ❄️🚗😂

Don’t be that person.

Channel your inner Lord/Lady of Preparedness and stock your vehicle with the essentials before winter arrives.

🧤 Warmth
🔦 Light
🥤 Food & water
🔋 Backup power
🧰 Emergency supplies

Because unlike the Seven Kingdoms, Alaska gives you plenty of warning.

Prepare your car. Prepare yourself. Survive winter like a boss. 👑❄️

Winter is coming. Are you ready?
