It can be common to feel a sense of shame or embarrassment when talking about domestic violence. Abusive partners often use isolation, manipulation, and blame to make you feel like the situation is somehow your fault.

But abuse is never your fault. The responsibility belongs entirely to the person who chose to cause harm, not the person who is surviving it.

Speaking your truth takes immense courage, but you never have to share your story until you are ready. When you are ready, there is a community of advocates here waiting to listen and support you with zero judgment.

You are worthy of safety, respect, and peace.

What does it mean to raise boys who speak up when something isn’t right?

In this thoughtful opinion piece, a member of our board, Scott Kendall, explores the importance of raising young men who challenge harmful behavior, promote respect, and help shape safer communities. Prevention starts with everyday conversations and the courage to speak up when it matters.

Thank you, Scott, for your leadership, advocacy, and commitment to preventing violence before it happens.

Do you have a safety plan?

A safety plan is a personalized plan that includes ways to remain safe while in an abusive relationship, planning to leave, or after you leave. Because your situation is unique, a good safety plan is made specifically for you and can be continuously updated.

Here are a few things your plan might include:

πŸ’œ Safe Areas: Identifying areas in your home with easy escape routes and away from potential harm.
πŸ’œ Support System: Memorizing important numbers and creating a code word with trusted friends or family.
πŸ’œ Important Items: Setting aside money and keeping a hidden bag ready with essential documents like birth certificates and medical records.
πŸ’œ Protecting Children: Setting up a safe space for them in the home or teaching them how and when to call 911.

You have incredible strength, and taking small steps toward safety is a powerful act of self-care.
