More hands-on learning opportunities at Anchorage STREAM Academy!

Thanks to a $15,000 grant from Views On Learning, Anchorage STrEaM Academy will expand access to the technology and scientific equipment students need for hands-on, project-based learning.

The grant will help address equipment needs in the school’s existing instructional program, including 3D printing, tools for collecting scientific data during outdoor learning expeditions, wind energy kits, and supplies for ongoing research projects.

These tools support students as they ask questions, collect and analyze data, design solutions, test their ideas, and make improvements. Expanding access will help all students participate more fully and apply what they learn in science, math, and technology to real-world challenges.

Thank you, Views on Learning, for investing in Anchorage STrEaM Academy students and providing tools that help them grow as researchers, problem-solvers, and learners!

Congratulations to Mary Dallas Allen, Professor in the UAA School of Social Work, who received a Community Engagement Mini-Grant for her project "Exploring the Anchorage School District Child in Transition Program Response to Ex-Typhoon Halong."

Allen and Jennifer Peeks will partner with ASD's Child in Transition Program to examine its experiences supporting students and families displaced from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta following ex-Typhoon Halong. Findings will inform strategies, training, and educational materials to help schools prepare for and respond to future climate-related disasters and displacement.

❄️ The first snow is on the ground in Anchorage!

Winter weather is here, and it’s a great time to make sure you’re ready for possible school delays or closures.

Take a minute to check your settings:

• ParentConnection: Make sure your contact information is up to date: https://parentconnect.asdk12.org/
• ASD Mobile App: Review your alerts and notifications: https://www.asdk12.org/mobileapp

What families need to know:

• Families are notified by 5:30 a.m. if there’s a delay or closure.
• Updates are shared by email, text, the ASD app, social media and local media partners.
• Check for a red banner at https://www.asdk12.org. A banner means there’s a schedule change. No banner means school is on time.

Stay safe, stay warm, and enjoy that first snowfall!
