Trial by Fire

By Deacon Dez

Have you ever wondered why you are where you are, figuratively and literally? Why you were born into the family you have? Why you were born into this time and place in history? The answer to all of these questions is simple: we really do not know. Not now anyway.

How often have you said something along the lines of “if only I would have been born into a different family,” or “if only I was born in a different era?" ...

AG Mills presses Alaska Judicial Council to comply with Public Records Request regarding DEI information

On October 20, 2026, Acting Alaska Attorney General Cori Mills filed an amicus brief in the case American First Legal Foundation v Alaska Judicial Council, in which American First Legal (AFL) sued the Alaska Judicial Council after the Council failed to provide information following a public records request. The request sought records regarding the application of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the judicial selection process.

The Alaska Judicial Council commands what AG Mills describes as "extraordinary gatekeeping authority over Alaska's judiciary." The Council decides which applicants the Governor may consider for appointment. If the Council excludes an applicant, the Governor cannot appoint that person regardless of the applicant's qualifications or the Governor's judgment. All judicial appointments are first screened by the Council, effectively giving AJC the first say in who is making the decisions in Alaska's courts....

$495 million for 32-miles of rail: Port MacKenzie Rail Extension now fully funded

On October 19, 2026, the Alaska Delegation and the Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, announced a federal award of up to $249 million to complete the Port MacKenzie Rail Extension. The project will connect Port MacKenzie's deepwater port facilities to the Alaska Railroad's 500-mile main line with 32 miles of new rail.

The Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) received the award through the Federal Railroad Administration's (FRA) Fiscal Year 2025–2026 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) Program. The project is expected to cost $311 million to complete on top of $184 million already spent. In addition to the $249 million federal grant, $62 million will come through a non-federal cost share of in-kind contributions from the Mat-Su Borough and cash contributions from AIDEA and the Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC). This puts the total cost of the project at up to $495 million.

In 2025, Rep. Kevin McCabe (R-Big Lake) argued that ARRC's estimate— at the time $274 million to complete the rail spur in addition to $184 million already spent on embankment and bridges— was overinflated. He stated a more reasonable cost would be $100-$150 million for the new rail. ARRC's estimate is now over double Rep. McCabe's estimate at $311 million. According to Rep. McCabe, this overinflated cost "suggests more than just inefficiency—it smells of political maneuvering." ...

Alaska Legislative Races: Part II of the 2026 Ultimate Conservative Voter Guide

The Legislature makes the laws and decides how to spend state money. Yes, the Governor can veto, but the Legislature can override any veto with a 2/3rd majority vote. While the Governor has control over the Executive branch, a conservative Governor who wants to effectively influence Alaska’s lawmaking relies on the effectiveness of Alaska’s conservative legislators.

Voters will see on their ballots how legislative candidates are registered whether Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, or some variety of independent. However, that does not reliably inform voters which candidates will fight for conservative policies, or which incumbents have true conservative voting records. That’s where this guide comes in. This guide helps voters understand where independent candidates fall on the political spectrum, which registered Republicans support liberal policies, and which Democrats tend to be more moderate vs far left.

We have combined information from 6 key conservative sources to give voters a comprehensive view of the state legislative candidates and a launching point for further research. Additionally, we give the official MRAK endorsements for each state legislative race. Please refer to the Methodology section for more details on how our endorsements were decided.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is to show up! Freedom and democracy are rare— a fact we often forget— with about three-quarters of people worldwide living under autocratic rule. Let’s exercise our unique responsibility as citizens of a free country.

A Sick Cycle Carousel: What Is Due When Reason Fails

By Dr. Cindy

Law, St. Thomas Aquinas teaches, is an ordinance of reason for the common good, and justice renders to each what is due. When a person repeatedly assaults others and is then found incompetent to stand trial, both the injured and the incompetent are owed more than another dismissal and a return to the street. The parishioner struck at Holy Family was due the protection of the peace. The woman who struck her is due care she cannot secure for herself. A city that supplies neither has failed both....
