Two academies, one training center, and a whole lot of hard work!

It was a busy day at the AFD Training Center. Our New Hire Academy recruits kept building the foundation of their firefighting careers, while firefighters in the Truck Operations Academy sharpened the skills to run on the ladder trucks.

Whether they're just starting out or stepping into a new role, our firefighters never stop training to serve Anchorage.

Multiple 911 calls hit dispatch early this morning reporting smoke and flames coming from a single story six-plex in Mountain View. When firefighters arrived four of the units were already consumed in fire. The flames didn't take long to knock down but embers smoldered for a couple hours in the small crawl space kept firefighters on scene until just after 3:00AM. The origin and cause are under investigation. No injuries were reported.

Station 4 recently visited a local school for a fire safety presentation, and we want to visit yours next!

Our crews love teaching students how to stay safe, from what to do when a smoke alarm sounds to how to get out of the house and where to meet their family outside. If your Anchorage school would like a fire station to visit, email [email protected] with your school’s name, location, grade levels, and a few dates that work for you. We’ll check whether a crew can come out.

Thank you for having us, and thank you to our Station 4 crew for keeping the next generation fire safe!

Over the past week, Anchorage Fire Department and Chugiak Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company worked hand-in-hand to complete annual pump testing of all CVFR apparatus, in accordance with applicable NFPA standards.
This critical annual testing ensures CVFR apparatus are ready to perform when called upon. Verifying pump performance and operational capacity helps ensure the equipment is capable of meeting the demands of an emergency when it matters most. Maintaining this level of readiness is essential to the safety of firefighters and the communities we serve.

Taking a peek behind the curtain at today, you can witness part of 's crew happenings. Like all shifts, theirs began at 9:00am sharp. The tones sent E12, along with many other apparatuses, to a possible structure fire. The culprit for the suspicious smoke ended up being two ignited lithium-ion batteries in a yard in a neighborhood off 64th Ave. Firefighters got the homeowner away from the noxious fumes before submerging the batteries in a metal container with water. Truck 12 took responsibility for the rest of the call and asked E12 to cover its next harrowing assignment... a safety talk at Little 1's Learning Center!!!
The kiddos learned what firefighters look like fully geared up, the importance of practicing home evacuations, and the differences between engines and trucks. During the Q&A portion of the visit, Captain Mack and his crew answered hard-hitting questions like "Do you have uncles?", "Why do you go up and down fire poles?", "How do you get to a fire with all the traffic?", and much more.
Next up-- Station 12, joined by , renewed their CPR certifications! Regardless of how often firefighters utilize their CPR capabilities, changes and best practices get updated due to research and potential improved methods. (They all passed).
Just before 2:00pm, E12 shot off again-- this time to assist a sick person off Dimond. When they determined no medical intervention was necessary, the Mobile Crisis Team responded for follow up.
A lull in calls in their area allowed the E12 crew to take self-initiated trainings, provide a station tour, and catch a meal.
As of 6:03pm-- toned E12 out for a traffic collision at the Northbound exit of the Seward Hwy and O'Malley. Time will tell what the rest of the shift (ending 9:00am tomorrow) will hold because no two crews spend their days the same and no crystal ball provides a heads up for what comes next.
Stay safe, Anchorage!

Fire engines in Anchorage spend a lot of their life idling. Hours on scene, 20 below, then straight back into a warm bay. That is brutal on a cooling system, and the parts catalog didn’t have an answer.

So the AFD Maintenance Shop built one.

This week’s Fire Truck Friday features a custom coolant filter designed and built in-house for our apparatus. Division Chief Oral Scott walks us through why the shop made it, how it works, and how it keeps engines and ambulances in service rather than in the shop.

It’s one more example of the work behind the scenes that most people never see, but every call depends on.

Gasline Shaded Fuel Break Project Complete!

The Anchorage Fire Department Wildfire Division is proud to announce the completion of the Gasline Fuels Treatment Project near Hilltop Ski Area!

The project established a 200-foot-wide shaded fuel break encompassing approximately 20 acres through Far North Bicentennial Park, reducing hazardous fuels and improving wildfire suppression opportunities along a critical corridor connecting Anchorage neighborhoods to the wildlands of Chugach State Park.

The project also connects to the existing Campbell Airstrip Road fuel break, strengthening a growing network of wildfire mitigation treatments across Anchorage.

This work was made possible through federal funding and an outstanding partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the newly established U.S. Wildland Fire Service (USWFS). Their continued investment and commitment to cross-boundary wildfire mitigation are helping turn planning into measurable results for Anchorage residents.

Through this partnership, we've now completed 50 acres of hazardous fuels treatments and approximately two miles of shaded fuel breaks across three projects, with more work planned.

A special thank-you to Bureau of Land Management - Alaska, USWFS - Alaska, Anchorage Parks and Recreation, Hilltop Ski Area, and our project partners for helping make Anchorage more resilient to wildfire.

Protecting neighborhoods. Connecting fuel breaks. Building a more wildfire-resilient Anchorage.

Fire Inspector Craig Torrey officially collected his 25-year pin recognizing his dedicated service to our community. If his quarter century of fire prevention and life safety work wasn't enough to start a slow clap, maybe his volunteer community service of collecting litter and trash throughout the municipality might. On his off time, FI Torrey often picks a stretch of road somewhere in the Muni and sets to work restoring it to the way it should be-- without garbage. FI Torrey's servant heart is often hidden by his humbleness. We see you, FI Torrey, and appreciate your impressive actions-- rain 🌧, snow ❄, or shine 🌞-- both on and off duty.
