Alaska Humanities Forum The Alaska Humanities Forum is a non-profit, non-partisan organization that designs and facilitates experiences to bridge distance and difference.

Our programming shares and preserves stories of Alaska and explores what it means to be an Alaskan. The Alaska Humanities Forum is the state Humanities Council under the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Alaska Humanities Forum (Forum) is one of 56 state and territorial groups supported by the NEH and a member of the Federation of State Humanities Councils. At its inception in 1972, the Forum primarily provided grants with funds from National Endowment for the Humanities. The Grants Program is dedicated to providing statewide services to preserve humanities experiences in Alaska, at times also successfully partnering with such entities as the Rasmuson Foundation and Municipality of Anchorage. One such partnership project was the Alaska Statehood Experience (ASE) which provided $1 million in competitive grants to honor Alaska’s 50th anniversary of statehood. Since the 1990s, the Forum has been cultivating a public statewide presence by facilitating workshops, forums, and conferences within a neutral venue on both current events and public issues: Speaker Bureaus from 1994-96; Talking Anchorage Public Forums in 1996; Clemente Course workshops in 1999; Alaska History and Cultural Studies Curriculum Project in 2003, with follow up Teacher Training Institutes in 2004-05; Conventions of Young Alaskans and Alaska Constitutional Convention in 2006; and various Alaska Statehood Experience projects in 2008. At the turn of the 21st century, the Forum successfully developed and piloted a cross-cultural exchange, funded first as an earmark from Congress through Senator Ted Stevens and then by federal grants from the U.S. Department of Education Alaska Native Education Program (ANEP). Since 2000, the Forum has provided support in two key areas to ensure participant engagement and achievement: expertise in delivering cross-cultural training on a statewide level, as well as partnerships with leaders in cross-cultural issues and professional development. The Forum is experienced in managing and operating significant grant-funded projects, including grants from private federal and state agencies, and has responsibly managed more than $20 million dollars of federal funds and tens of thousands of dollars of state and local government funds, as well as private funds.

Thank you Ben Mallott for six years of incredible Board service! ✨

Last month, Ben termed off of the Forum Board after serving two terms, including two years as Board Chair. He was a driving force behind many of the partnerships the Forum depends on today, and he strengthened our relationships with statewide leaders and in Washington, D.C. Ben is the current president of the Alaska Federation of Natives.

Under his leadership, the Forum expanded its reach into more rural communities and small towns across Alaska. Ben championed our cross-cultural programs, loved seeing our work inspire young Alaskans, and cared deeply about supporting rural schools to better serve their students.

Ben believes strongly in bringing people together across differences and saw the Forum as a resource for all Alaskans. The Forum thrived under his leadership, and we are deeply thankful. ✨

Whether we know it as Los Anchorage or "Alaska's Biggest Village," Anchorage is a complex place. Military, Indigenous, immigrant, and settler histories intertwine to form a complex, layered identity - one that is helping to shape the vision for a future Tikahtnu/Upper Cook Inlet National Heritage Area.

Join us on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Anchorage Senior Activities Center to experience this year's Day of Storytelling, where food and storytelling will help you meet new people from different generations, have a greater appreciation for Anchorage's history and diversity, and get a renewed sense of hope and possibility for the future.

Themes from the day will help inform the National Heritage Area application.

For this week's ARTWORKS video in honor of Arts & Humanities Month, we're excited to share about the Alaska Teen Media Institute (ATMI)!

✨What happens when young people are given the tools, trust, and opportunity to tell their own stories? ATMI gives young Alaskans the skills and platform to become creators, storytellers, and media makers, helping build the next generation of Alaska’s creative community. ATMI is also a former Forum grantee!

Congratulations to Rocky Plotnick, Association of Fundraising Professionals AFP Alaska Chapter's Outstanding Individual Philanthropist for 2026!

We're grateful for Rocky's support of the Forum and especially admire her commitment to personally experience our programs and events. Rocky leads with her heart and her values, and does so much for many nonprofits in Alaska. We're honored that the Forum is one of them! 🤩

We were honored to support the planning of last week's Philanthropy Northwest PNW26 conference - its first full conference in Alaska! - and to share about our Magnetic North films that uplift stories of influential Alaskans.

In the words of Forum President & CEO Kameron Perez-Verdia, "We often think about investing in our communities as being about building roads and buildings. But what about stories, the stories that connect us, that give us hope, that contribute to our survival?"

Explore these stories and more at https://www.akhf.org/programs/forum-digital-stories ✨

Quyana cakneq Stephen Qacung Blanchett, who recently termed off of the Forum Board of Directors after six years of service.

Qacung, a Yup'ik musician and co-founder of Pamyua, connected us with artists and musicians across the state and helped strengthen our relationships with partners like the Alaska Native Heritage Center.

On our Board, Qacung was a powerful voice for storytelling, brought insight to our fundraising and communications work, mentored young people in our youth programs and Leadership Anchorage participants, and brought creativity and fresh ideas to every conversation. He consistently pushed us to keep the realities of rural Alaska and the needs of Alaska Native peoples at the center of our work, so that the Forum truly serves all Alaskans.

We are grateful for his vision and his generous spirit. ☀
