Meet 2027 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship finalist Hydee Hall of Anderson High School!

Music, service, and leadership have played a central role in Hydee's high school experience. Through the AHS Marching Highlanders, she grew from a student who preferred not to stand out into a leader, serving first as Flute Section Leader and now as Drum Major. She has also served her community through Rotary Interact, participating in efforts such as Coats for Caring and other local events.

Hydee plans to study Music Education and hopes to give future students the same confidence and sense of belonging that music gave her. Her approach to leadership stands out: for Hydee, leading isn't about being the loudest voice, but about listening, encouraging others, setting an example, and helping people discover their own potential.

The Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship (LECS), administered locally by the Madison County Community Foundation, provides full tuition, required fees, and up to $900 annually for required books and equipment for up to eight semesters at an eligible Indiana college or university.

Two Madison County students will be selected as 2027 Lilly Endowment Community Scholars and announced in December. Each finalist not selected as a Lilly Scholar will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Madison County Community Foundation.

Congratulations, Blake!

Meet 2027 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship finalist Blake Simmons of Anderson High School!

Blake pairs exceptional academic achievement with service shaped by his own life experiences. In addition to serving as treasurer of Anderson High School's National Honor Society, he has volunteered extensively as an advocate for Breakthrough T1D/JDRF, helping raise funds for research and supporting those who are learning to navigate a Type 1 diabetes diagnosis. He has also put his interest in technology to work repairing devices through AHS's Chrome Room.

Blake's own experiences helped spark his interest in science and medicine. He plans to study biochemistry at IU Indianapolis and hopes to pursue medicine, potentially as a cardiologist or endocrinologist. His goal is not only to care for patients, but also to help improve how people facing serious health conditions are supported and treated.

Recipients receive full tuition for up to eight semesters, required fees, and a special allocation of up to $900 annually for required books and equipment while pursuing a full-time bachelor's degree at an eligible Indiana public or private nonprofit college or university.

The two recipients will be announced in December. As part of our commitment to recognizing exceptional students, each Madison County finalist who is not selected as a Lilly Endowment Community Scholar receives a $1,000 scholarship from the Madison County Community Foundation.

LifeSmart Youth is restarting its Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and is looking for students who want to share their ideas, perspectives, and experiences while making a difference in their community.

The Youth Advisory Council is open to students in grades 7–12, and no previous leadership or advocacy experience is required! This could be a great opportunity for AHS students interested in community involvement, health and wellness, advocacy, leadership, civic engagement, or simply having a voice in issues that affect young people.

YAC is looking for students who are willing to learn, get involved, and bring their own unique perspective to the group. Meetings and participation opportunities may be available in person and/or virtually.

Interested AHS students are encouraged to check out the attached flyer for more information about expectations, commitments, incentives, and how to get involved.

Questions? Contact the LifeSmart Youth Advisory Council at [email protected] or YAC Coordinator Lindsey Welch at [email protected].

Kamar’a is the first Anderson High School student to receive this monthly award, which recognizes young people who are making a positive difference in their school and community. With straight A’s, two jobs, a positive attitude, and a heart for helping others, Kamar’a is an outstanding example of what it means to work hard, lead with kindness, and make a difference.
