Look up, Anderson! Your roof and chimney can collect leaves, pine needles and other debris—giving wind-blown embers fuel to ignite.

This month, take a few minutes to:

🏠 Clear leaves and needles from roof valleys and gutters.
🔍 Check for loose or damaged shingles, flashing and vents.
🌳 Trim branches at least 10 feet from chimney and stovepipe outlets.
🧹 Have your chimney cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.

If you cannot safely reach an area, hire a professional.
A clean, well-maintained roof gives embers fewer places to find fuel.

This week, the Anderson Police Department encourages parents and guardians to talk with their teens about the dangers of speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and the importance of always wearing a seat belt.

Leading by example and building safe driving habits early can help keep our teens and everyone on the road safer. Let’s work together to make every drive a safe one!

Lithium Battery Safety Tip:
Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

Fire Safety can be fun!
As part of Fire Prevention week, we enjoyed visiting Tree of Life School to teach students about smoke alarms, home escape plans, and when to call 911.

Thank you, Tree of Life School, for welcoming us! Families, ask your students what they learned and practice your escape plan together.

That inexpensive replacement charger may not be a bargain.

Use the cord and charger that came with your device—or one specifically approved by its manufacturer.

The wrong charger can deliver power differently than the battery was designed to receive, increasing the risk of damage and overheating. Cheap or off-brand chargers may also lack important safety protections.

Before plugging in tonight, take a quick look:

• Does the charger belong with that device?
• Is the cord frayed, cracked or damaged?
• Does the charger become unusually hot?
• Is the product listed by a recognized testing laboratory?

If something doesn’t look or feel right, stop using it.

Cheap charger? Don’t chance it.

How many rechargeable devices are in your home?

Start counting and the number grows quickly: phones, tablets, laptops, headphones, toys, power tools, lawn equipment, e-bikes and portable battery packs.

It’s Fire Prevention Week and this year we’re focusing on the way we charge those devices.

Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small space. They are generally safe when used correctly, but damaged batteries and unsafe charging habits can lead to overheating and fire.

This week, we will be sharing a few charging habits worth checking in your own home.

Safe charging is a superpower—and it starts with paying attention every time you plug in.

Before the alarm. Before the call. Before an emergency begins—there is prevention.

October is Fire Prevention Month, and throughout the month Anderson Fire Department will be sharing simple actions that can help prevent a fire or help your family respond quickly if one occurs.

Fire Prevention Week begins October 4, and this year’s national theme is:

“Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower.”

Phones, laptops, power tools, toys, e-bikes and many other things we use every day are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. When damaged or charged incorrectly, these batteries can overheat and start a fire.

Follow along this month for practical ways to make your home and family safer.
Start today by identifying one simple action you can take to make your home or property safer.

Because protecting Anderson starts before the call comes in.
