This week, the Anderson Police Department encourages parents and guardians to talk with their teens about the dangers of speeding, distracted driving, impaired driving, and the importance of always wearing a seat belt.

Leading by example and building safe driving habits early can help keep our teens and everyone on the road safer. Let’s work together to make every drive a safe one!

Clean out the medicine cabinet and help keep unused medications out of the wrong hands.

Join us Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Redding City Hall, 777 Cypress Ave. for National Drug Take Back Day. The drive-thru event offers a quick, convenient way to safely dispose of unwanted or unneeded medications.

At the last event in April, our community turned in more than 300 pounds of medication for safe disposal.

APD is proud to work alongside our local and federal partners to make this event possible.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Anderson Police Department Awarded $70,000 Grant for DUI, Speeding, and Distracted Driving Program to Increase Safety on Roads

The Anderson Police Department announces today that it has received a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) to support its ongoing enforcement and education programs to help reduce the number of serious injuries and deaths on our roads.

Traffic Officer Mayfield said “This grant is very important to the Department as it helps keep the motoring public, pedestrians, and citizens of Anderson safe. This grant allows the Anderson Police Department to field additional officers to conduct proactive DUI patrols and enhanced traffic enforcement throughout the year without costing the city additional resources. The Department is grateful to be awarded this grant for the 2026-2027 year”

The grant will provide additional programs and resources, including:
• DUI checkpoints and patrols focused on stopping suspected impaired drivers.
• High-visibility distracted driving enforcement operations targeting drivers in violation of California’s hands-free cell phone law.
• Enforcement operations focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of people biking or walking at risk.
• Enforcement operations focused on top driving violations that cause crashes: speeding, failure to yield, stop sign and/or red-light running, and improper turning or lane changes.
• Community presentations on traffic safety issues such as distracted driving, impaired driving, speeding and bicycle and pedestrian safety.
• Collaborative enforcement efforts with neighboring agencies.

“Traffic safety begins with everyday decisions,” OTS Director Stephanie Dougherty said. “When we address the risky driving behaviors that put everyone on the road in danger, including speeding, distraction, and impairment, we can prevent crashes and save lives. By supporting enforcement efforts and educating communities, we’re helping to build a safety culture where looking out for others and safe travel behaviors are the norm.”

The grant program runs through September 2027.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

****Case Update APD26-002003****

On October 3, 2026, the Anderson Police Department received a report from the parent of an Anderson Heights Elementary School student that their child had disclosed being inappropriately touched by an employee of the after-school program. A safety plan was put into place for the alleged victim.

On October 5, 2026, Detectives responded to Anderson Heights and advised school administration about the report. Detectives interviewed the suspect, who was released pending further investigation.

Over the following days, Detectives developed probable cause to believe that Ean Peterson, 18, of Anderson, committed the following crimes:

California Penal Code 288(a) – Lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age.

California Penal Code 288(b)(1) – Lewd or lascivious acts with a child under 14 years of age by duress, menace, or fear.

On October 9, 2026, Peterson was arrested without incident at his home and booked into the Shasta County Jail.

The Anderson Police Department appreciates the staff and administration of Anderson Heights Elementary School and the Cascade Union Elementary School District for their professionalism and cooperation during this investigation.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Anderson Police Department is aware of social media posts promoting unauthorized fights and large vehicle gatherings at Anderson River Park, including reckless driving, burnouts, and “donuts.”

Anderson River Park is a community space, and activity that puts participants, bystanders, or other park users at risk will not be tolerated.

APD will be providing additional patrols in and around the park. Officers will take appropriate enforcement action when violations are observed, which may include citations, arrests, and vehicle-related enforcement.

We also ask for the community’s help. If you see dangerous, disruptive, or suspicious activity occurring at Anderson River Park, please contact APD so officers can respond. Keeping the park safe and welcoming takes cooperation from everyone who uses and cares about it.

Our goal is simple: a safe community and a park that remains available for everyone to enjoy.
