It’s been a busy start to Fall for City of Anderson Firefighters Local 1262. One that reflects the many ways our members continue to serve our community, support our families, and honor those who came before us.

Last weekend, members of our Executive Board attending the 2026 Mayor Broderick Charity Ball, supporting an event that benefits local teachers and classrooms throughout our community.

As September came to a close, so did our 25th anniversary 9/11 shirt campaign. Thanks to everyone who supported this year’s shirts, Local 1262 is proud to send a $500 donation to the FDNY Foundation in honor of the firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001, and the legacy of service that continues today.

We opened October and Breast Cancer Awareness Month with our Local 1262 Breast Cancer Awareness shirts. Proceeds from this year’s campaign will benefit the Ascension St. Vincent Anderson Foundation Cancer Fund, helping support patients and families right here in our community. Thursday, we hosted another successful Local 1262 Charity & Scholarship Fund Golf Outing. The support of our golfers, sponsors, volunteers, and community partners allows our Charity & Scholarship Fund to continue assisting sick and injured firefighters and their families, providing scholarships for our members’ children, supporting local organizations, and this year, helping provide flood relief for families affected right here in Anderson.

And we ended the week alongside hundreds of firefighters and fire service families from across the country as we celebrated the life of a true fire service legend, Brother Tommy Miller. His lifetime of service to firefighters and organized labor leaves a legacy that will continue for generations.

From supporting teachers and cancer patients, to helping our own families and neighbors, to remembering those who dedicated their lives to the fire service, this start to Fall that represents what Local 1262 is all about. Service. Brotherhood. Community.

A little Union 101 after our golfers hit the course today.

Local 1262 Treasurer Cooper and President Leever sat down with our two newest recruits to go through the ins and outs of Anderson Firefighters Local 1262, the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana, and the International Association of Fire Fighters. We discussed what each organization does, how we represent our members, and why involvement matters.

We’re happy to report that both officially joined the Union today! They also both chose to contribute at the maximum level to the Local 1262 Charity & Scholarship Fund, the Anderson Fire PAC, and the Indiana Professional Fire Fighters PAC.

That’s a pretty strong start to their careers and to their involvement in Local 1262. Welcome to the Union, brothers. We’re glad to have you with us!

City of Anderson firefighters spent time this week conducting high-angle rope rescue training, utilizing our aerial apparatus and specialized rescue equipment to practice safely raising and lowering a packaged patient from an elevated location.

These operations require specialized equipment, technical knowledge, and extensive coordination between crews. The Anderson Fire Department maintains a highly trained Technical Rescue Team prepared to respond to a wide range of specialized emergencies, including high-angle and other rope rescues, confined-space rescue, vehicle and machinery extrication, trench rescue, and more.

The importance of that training was demonstrated just hours later. That same night, several of these members were dispatched to assist the Anderson Police Department with a subject stranded on a billboard platform. Crews put their training and experience to work, utilizing Ladder 1 to safely and successfully rescue the man from the elevated platform.

You never know when training will become a real-world response. Our members continually put in the work to make sure they're prepared when the call comes.

Anderson Firefighters Local 1262 join our Brothers and Sisters of the Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana and the International Association of Fire Fighters in mourning the passing of PFFUI President Emeritus Tom Miller.

The Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana mourns the passing of our President Emeritus, Brother Tom Miller, whose lifetime of service and leadership helped shape the fire service, organized labor, and the lives of countless fire fighters across Indiana and North America.

Tom's service began in 1964 when he joined the United States Navy. After serving two tours of duty in Vietnam aboard the USS Tioga County, he returned home to Indianapolis, where he joined the Indianapolis Fire Department in 1968. A proud member of Indianapolis Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 416, he served as trustee and vice president before taking on leadership roles that would ultimately influence the fire service across Indiana and North America. Tom served as President of the PFFUI from 1978 to 2002, leading our organization through decades of growth and progress while steadfastly advocating for the rights, benefits, and safety of professional fire fighters. His influence extended far beyond Indiana, through his service as IAFF 8th District Vice President and later as General Secretary-Treasurer of the International Association of Fire Fighters.

Tom's commitment to the fire service was deeply personal. After losing his father, an Indianapolis firefighter, in the line of duty when he was just nine years old, he dedicated his life to serving others. Throughout his career, Tom was a tireless advocate for active and retired fire fighters, particularly on pensions and benefits. His work on behalf of Indiana's public safety professionals leaves a legacy that will continue to benefit generations of fire fighters and their families.

While Tom's accomplishments were extraordinary, those who knew him best will remember his sense of humor, his unwavering loyalty, and his willingness to help anyone in need. In his own words, he simply wanted to be remembered as someone who liked to help people. Few individuals have lived that principle more fully.

The PFFUI extends its deepest condolences to his wife Barb, their children, the members of Indianapolis Local 416, and all who were fortunate enough to know and work alongside Tom.

His legacy lives on in the strength of our union, the protections secured for fire fighters, and the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable journey of service.

Rest in peace, Brother Miller.

The PFFUI will share information regarding visitation and funeral services as soon as arrangements are finalized.

Yesterday was a great day of fellowship, memories, and catching up as Local 1262 and the City of Anderson Fire Department hosted our Retiree Reunion at AFD Headquarters.

Held every five years, this year's reunion brought together more than 80 retirees and spouses. With 120 AFD retirees now living throughout Indiana and several across the country, we don't get the opportunity to have so many together very often, which makes days like this even more special.

Our retirees heard updates and remarks from Fire Chief Dave Cravens, Mayor Thomas Broderick, Terri Austin, Indiana State Representative 2002-2022, AFD Pension Secretary Matt Cole, and Local 1262 President Cody Leever, who provided a five-year look back and a look ahead at the work and accomplishments of the International Association of Fire Fighters, Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana, and Local 1262.

Our retirees also had the opportunity to see just how much AFD has changed since our last reunion. Nearly every in-service crew stopped by throughout the day, department apparatus and equipment were on full display, and our Dive and Rescue Team trailers were opened up for everyone to look through.

Headquarters was also completely open for retirees to tour and see the renovations that have taken place since our last reunion five years ago.

While a lot can change in five years, the stations, apparatus, equipment, and even the faces around the department, the connection between generations of Anderson Firefighters remains the same. It was great seeing so many of those who came before us back at Headquarters, swapping stories, reconnecting with old friends, and meeting some of the firefighters carrying on the tradition today.

A special thank you to Ms. B's Restaurant and Pub for catering providing a great meal at the reunion and keeping everyone fed again at the after-party at the Local 1262 Union Hall.

Thank you to everyone who attended and everyone who helped make the day possible. We look forward to doing it again in five years!

Once an Anderson Firefighter, always an Anderson Firefighter.

Investing in Public Safety Means Investing in Anderson

Local 1262 President Leever attended this evening’s City of Anderson Council meeting in support of the Fire Department’s 2027 budget. The budget reflects the salaries and benefits negotiated for our firefighters, continued investments in training and new apparatus, and maintains staffing at 114 firefighters.

Our department has made meaningful improvements in the service we provide to our community through collaboration between Local 1262, Mayor Thomas Broderick, the Anderson City Council, and the Fire Chiefs. One of the clearest examples came one year ago with the addition of a fourth ambulance. That investment has helped significantly decrease response times to medical emergencies while also significantly reducing the number of times neighboring departments are needed to respond into Anderson to handle medical calls.

During tonight’s public hearing, a county citizen spoke about the importance of police and fire services but characterized them as an expense rather than an investment. There’s a saying: “Show me your budget, and I’ll show you your priorities.” When a city invests in its Fire Department, it invests in staffing, training, equipment and apparatus, but more importantly, it invests in faster response times, better emergency services, and the safety of the people who live, work and visit Anderson. The results of those investments can be seen every day.

We greatly appreciate Councilwoman Jennifer Culp and Councilman Jeff Freeman for respectfully offering a different perspective and recognizing our police officers and firefighters for what we are: an investment in this community.

Thank you, Mayor Broderick and the entire Anderson City Council, for their continued support of the Anderson Fire Department and the men and women of Local 1262.

When Anderson invests in its firefighters, it invests in Anderson.

City of Anderson Firefighters were well represented at several events across Indianapolis this week focused on education, remembrance, and strengthening the voice of professional firefighters.

Brothers Nick Cole, AJ Rogers, and Isaac White represented Local 1262 at the 2026 Professional Fire Fighters Union of Indiana Fall Education Series New Member Conference on Thursday and Friday. The conference gave newer members an opportunity to learn more about our union, including labor history, member resources, political action, legislative affairs, retirement, communications, and the work being done on behalf of professional firefighters across Indiana.

Local 1262 President Cody Leever also participated in the conference, presenting on the importance of political engagement for professional firefighters and joining a panel discussion on legislative affairs.

Thursday evening, Nick, AJ, and Isaac joined Local 1262 leadership at the Indiana Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony, where firefighters from across the state gathered to honor the 10 Indiana firefighters whose names were added to the memorial this year.

On Friday, Local 1262 leadership were joined by Brother John Parker for the Indianapolis Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 416 9/11 Memorial March and Ceremony, commemorating the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, and honoring the 343 FDNY firefighters and all those who lost their lives as a result of that day.

We are proud to see our members taking the time to learn more about their union, honor those who came before us, and stay engaged in the issues that impact firefighters and their families.

Thank you to Nick, AJ, Isaac, John, and our Local 1262 leadership for representing Anderson Firefighters Local 1262 throughout the week.
