On Saturday October 11 members of the technical rescue team and Anderson Fire Department responded to two technical rescue responses in Anderson County.

Around 2:00pm members responded to River ST in the Friendship community to assist station 15 with a confined space rescue with an animal in a well.

Shortly after the first call around 4:00pm members responded to the area of Rayben LN in the homeland park community to assist station 3 with shoring operations after a vehicle struck a structure causing significant damage to the building requiring it to be stabilized.

Thank you to all the team members who continue to respond and serve the citizens of Anderson County and thank you to all the agencies involved in the incidents for their assistance on scene.

Today, members of the technical rescue team had the unique opportunity to use an acquired structure in our training.

Members of the technical rescue team and the Anderson Fire Department discussed building construction and load paths to understand how loads transfer through the building into the foundation. Members also reviewed both the Paratech struts and the Hurst AirShores to learn the limitations of each.

Once members were familiar with the struts, they began installing temporary shoring using the Hurst AirShores.

Next month's training will review temporary shoring, followed by using wood shoring as permanent shores.

Thank you to the members of the rescue team who continue to support the team by staying active and working together.

On the morning of September 21 around 12:00 am, members of the Technical Rescue Team and the Anderson Fire Department responded to West Pelzer to assist the West Pelzer Fire Dept. with a confined space rescue of a dog in a well.

Initial arriving personnel on scene reported that a dog had fallen to what appeared to be the bottom of a 50 foot well and was still alive with water standing in the bottom. Once Rescue 103 arrived on scene and began air monitoring and putting together a rescue plan it was determined that due to atmospheric conditions members entering the hole would need to be on supplied air.

Simultaneously, while a permit was being filled out members began assembling the needed equipment to safely enter the space and remove the dog. With a member entering the space on supplied air, another member stood by with an SCBA ready to enter the space as the back up entrant if needed. The initial rescuer in the hole was able to successfully secure the dog and bring it up to be reunited with its owners.

We would like to thank those members from the rescue team who responded and especially the members of Station 6 for responding and making this a successful confined space rescue.

A very important take away from this incident is the reminder of how important air monitoring is for confined spaces. It’s very easy for complacency to mislead you and let you think that just because an animal is alive and moving in the bottom of a confined space such as a well or even a storm drain that the atmosphere is safe for you to go in with no respiratory protection. Let this stand as a reminder that that’s not always the case. The air monitors used both at the top and on the entrant showed the need for supplied air as the O2 was 11% near the bottom.

Tech Rescue Training Reminder

We will be conducting structural collapse training at an acquired structure on Saturday September the 26th from 0900-1300. Training will focus on familiarization of the airshores on the collapse trailer and paratech shores that are on Rescue 103. We will look specifically at using shores as temporary shoring in the event of some type of structural failure, identify load paths and how the load of the structure is carried, and discuss how to replace the temporary shoring with permanent wood shores which will be covered in the next months training. Team members are asked to check their Active911 alerts for the address.

High risk low frequency incidents happen more than you most realize. Just yesterday in Anderson County there were two pretty much back to back calls for an MVA with a vehicle VS house. It’s important to be able to recognize the hazard’s associated with incidents like this and be able to properly stabilize the structure when necessary.

During the upcoming rescue training for September we’re going to shift our focus from ropes and begin to scratch the surface with some very simple shoring training. Training is still in the planning phase and a date will be announced in the coming days. During this training we’re going to cover structure assessments, hazards to look for, recognizing load paths and what’s structural and what’s not, and get into temporary shoring utilizing the HURST Air Shores that are in the collapse trailer as well as the Paratech struts on the rescue truck.

The goal for the remainder of the year will be to recognize the hazards and place temporary shoring, begin with learning about permanent wood shoring allowing members to understand how they’re built, the strengths and weaknesses of them, and lastly replacing the temporary shores with permanent shores to leave in place!

Looking forward to the remainder of the 2026 training season with the team and looking forward to planning out 2027s in the coming months!

Today the weather held off long enough for the technical rescue team to conduct its monthly training exercise, focusing on patient packaging utilizing Stokes baskets, SKED, and Yates Spec Pak. Subsequently, team members practiced operating twin tensioned rope systems and employing the Arizona Vortex as an artificial high directional to execute multiple raise-lower evolutions. The training concluded with simulated rescue scenarios that integrated all acquired skills, including litter attendants being lowered to victims, loading them into Stokes baskets, and raising them back up!
