Last night our office was invited to speak at the Grimes County Sheriff's Office 2nd Annual Citizens Academy, along with County Court at Law Judge Tuck McLain and 506th District Judge Gary Chaney.
The Judges both educated the attendees on the Grimes County court system and shared unique insights into their respective courts and roles.
Crime Victims Coordinator Brenda Williams and Chief Investigator John Wren shared information about the District Attorney's Office role in the local criminal justice system from working with local law enforcement on new cases, through the intake process, Grand Jury, court proceedings and finally trial. They shared the role of DA Investigators and how they assist local law enforcement agencies with investigations and prosecutors with court proceeding needs, using their experience and skills. Finally, Ms. Williams talked through the invaluable role of the Crime Victims personnel, who shepherd victims of crime through the legal process and recovery.
I was not able to be present last night because I was in El Salvador handling an eye witness deposition for a pending murder case, along with Judge McLain's daughter, Cailey McLain. Ms. McLain is one of the Defense Attorneys handling the murder case. I sent the photo here to be shared with the Citizens Academy, so they would understand the necessity of me missing this yearly event that I enjoy.
The primary message of the District Attorney's Office presentation was that our first role is to seek justice. Our office motto is "seeking justice together" because we treat our work as a team mission, recognizing it takes everyone from the administrative staff to the attorneys to make justice happen for our community. Today, my travel and work was for that very purpose, going the extra mile, to seek justice for a murder victim and his family.
My thanks to the Grimes County Sheriff's Office for inviting our office to participate and share information about the District Attorney's Office role in the criminal justice system. I would also like to thank Judge McLain (the former Grimes County District Attorney) for sharing stories and helping enlighten the Citizens Academy attendees about the role of the District Attorney in my absence. I am grateful!
