This week is recognized as Texas Native Plant Week. The Texas Legislature adopted a bill in 2009 to highlight the role of native plants and to encourage children to learn about the plants' importance. Learn more about native plants at https://www.wildflower.org/plant-sales and https://www.npsot.org/. The Native Plant Society of Texas has partnered with H-E-B, which is selling native plants such as Gulf Muhly and Inland Sea Oats. The demonstration gardens in Rosenberg of the Fort Bend County Master Gardeners include a Native Garden. Learn more at https://fbmg.org/native-garden/

Mike’s Random Garden Thoughts

Some stories have poignant, happy endings. Others involve being eaten by a wicked witch after being lured into her gingerbread house. This story falls somewhere in between.
It’s the story of a persimmon tree that was loaded with fruit in the spring. But gradually, over the course of a long, hot summer, it began dropping its fruit. One by one, they hit the ground.
The gardener watered, weeded, fertilized, and even pleaded with the stubborn tree to reconsider. But that darn tree just laughed an evil laugh and continued shedding fruit.
Finally, the spurned gardener went and got his axe. And then…he chickened out.
I mean, really, who needs that kind of a gory ending? Besides, I’ve always thought a little mercy was good for the soul, even when dealing with a tree that clearly has a wicked streak.
So now the gardener is anxiously watching the three remaining persimmons, hoping they’ll ripen before the raccoons discover this little treasure trove. After all, three persimmons are better than none.
In the meantime, it’s going to be another good day in the garden.
