$1.1 BILLION. That’s BILLION with a B.

That’s how much more Iowa is budgeted to spend than it expects to bring in this year.

As a teacher, I know what it’s like to make a budget stretch. I know what happens when there isn’t enough money to meet everyone’s needs. And as a parent, I know you can’t keep dipping into savings to cover everyday expenses without eventually having to make some hard decisions.

Yet that’s exactly what Iowa is doing.

We have real needs in this state. Public schools need adequate funding. Families are struggling with the cost of living. Our water quality needs attention. And we need to invest in keeping Iowans healthy.

Instead, we’re facing a billion-dollar gap between what our state collects and what it spends.

Yes, Iowa has money in reserve. But savings aren’t an unlimited source of income.

Iowans deserve an honest conversation about our budget, our priorities, and how we plan to pay for them.

Because if I ran my household budget the way our state is currently operating, I’d have some serious explaining to do.

And I think Iowa taxpayers deserve that same explanation.

Iowa's revenues are expected to grow modestly this year and next, but the state is still on track to spend a billion dollars more than it takes in.

Apparently, we've reached the point in politics where taking unflattering pictures of me, running my photos through AI, and using a picture of me knocking doors in the rain to make fun of my appearance is considered political discourse.

Well, here's the thing. 𝗜'𝗺 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗲𝘀𝘁. 𝗜'𝗺 𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯.

And while we're at it, let's talk about some of the other things being said.

Po*******hy in schools? I don't support it.

Boys in girls' locker rooms? I believe every student deserves privacy, safety, and dignity.

𝗜'𝗺 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿. 𝗠𝘆 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗔𝗟𝗟 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. Not just the ones who look like me, believe what I believe, or come from families like mine. ALL of them.

You don't have to manufacture outrage to convince me that kids deserve to be safe. I've spent my career making that a priority.

But you know what I really want to talk about?

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴. Families are struggling to afford groceries, housing, healthcare, and the everyday necessities that shouldn't feel like luxuries.

𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Every Iowan deserves clean, safe drinking water. We should be working together on real solutions instead of pointing fingers.

𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀. As a cancer survivor, this one is personal. Iowa's cancer burden deserves serious attention, investment in prevention and research, and a commitment to understanding what's putting our families at risk.

These are the conversations I want to have. These are the problems I want to help solve.

And you certainly don't have to use AI to make me look bad. I'm a real person. I have bad hair days. I get rained on. I get sweaty knocking doors. Sometimes I look exhausted. That's what happens when you're actually out doing the work.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗺𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝘀𝗸 𝗺𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. 𝗜 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁.

But if the best political argument you have is an altered picture of my face or another culture war talking point, we're missing an opportunity to talk about the things affecting Iowa families every single day.

I'm going to keep showing up, knocking doors, listening to people, and being exactly who I am.

𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗜'𝗱 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝘆 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗼𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗿𝘆𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸𝘀 𝗜 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻.
