Unbroken Voices A healing-centered community where lived experience becomes a lifeline for others. About Ryan
Welcome! For me, this is more than a profession—it’s a calling.

My name is Ryan, and I’m a Clinical Social Worker dedicated to supporting individuals navigating mental health challenges and substance use disorders. With specialized training in co-occurring conditions and a strong foundation in evidence-based care, I’ve committed my life to walking alongside individuals on their paths to healing and recovery. In addition to my clinical work, I serve as a certified QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) Gatekeeper Instructor through the QPR Institute. This role allows me to train community members in life-saving su***de prevention techniques, reduce stigma around mental illness, and empower others to become agents of change within their own circles. This page is the result of years of reflection and a desire to make a meaningful impact—not only through professional services, but by cultivating connection, hope, and resilience within the community. My vision is to build support networks that promote healing, raise awareness, and foster authentic engagement at the grassroots level. I feel incredibly fortunate to be paid for doing the work I love every single day. Thank you for being here. Together, we can build a stronger, more compassionate community.

Survival skills can make sense in the environment where they formed. When that environment changes, a different question matters: Does this response help you build the life and relationships you want?

In this short Unbroken Voices reflection, we explore why something that once helped you get through may no longer help you today. Recognizing that difference is a chance to choose what comes next, without shame.

💙🎙️ EPISODE FOUR OF FIVE: THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM
The War on Drugs, Drug Policy, and the Cost of Punishment

🐘 Before hope, we have to talk about the hard part.

For decades, America has waged a War on Drugs. We’ve spent enormous resources arresting, prosecuting, sentencing, and incarcerating people in the name of combating addiction.

But there’s a question we haven’t spent nearly enough time answering.

Did the War on Drugs actually solve the problem it was supposed to address?

Or did we build an enormous system of punishment around a condition that punishment was never equipped to treat?

In Episode Four of our five-part series, Addiction Makes Sense Before It Stops Making Sense, Ryan Vannatter examines the history, policies, consequences, and uncomfortable realities of America’s approach to drugs and addiction.

And some of those realities deserve considerably more attention than they’ve received.

⚖️ THE 100-TO-1 SENTENCING DISPARITY

For years, federal sentencing laws treated crack co***ne offenses dramatically more harshly than offenses involving equivalent quantities of powder co***ne.

The consequences were devastating, particularly for Black communities. Although reforms eventually reduced the disparity, the process of correcting these policies has been painfully slow and remains incomplete.

🚨 MA*****NA LEGALIZATION DIDN’T ERASE THE DAMAGE

Legalization changed the landscape, but it didn’t automatically undo decades of unequal enforcement, criminal records, or the racial disparities associated with ma*****na arrests.

Legalizing something today doesn’t erase what happened to people yesterday.

🏛️ THE SCALE OF DRUG INCARCERATION

We examine the continued consequences of drug-related incarceration and ask whether our criminal justice response has meaningfully addressed the underlying issues associated with substance use disorders.

🌍 WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM DRUG COURTS AND PORTUGAL?

There are different approaches to drug policy, including treatment-oriented drug courts and Portugal’s model of decriminalization.

Neither provides a magical solution, but both offer important lessons about what happens when we reconsider the relationship between addiction, public health, and criminal justice.

💙 THE QUESTION AT THE HEART OF THIS EPISODE

We have spent decades attempting to punish our way out of addiction.

But addiction is not something that disappears simply because the consequences become more severe.

Punishment can change someone’s circumstances. It cannot, by itself, treat a substance use disorder.

And perhaps it’s time we stopped confusing the two.

📚💙 CONTINUE LEARNING WITH THE UNBROKEN VOICES HEALING LIBRARY

Understanding addiction requires more than examining individual behavior. It requires understanding trauma, mental health, social conditions, public policy, and the systems that influence people’s opportunities for recovery.

Our Healing Library is designed to make education, understanding, and recovery resources more accessible.

💙 WE NEED TO HAVE THIS CONVERSATION.

Not because everyone will agree about drug policy. They won’t.

Not because there are easy answers. There aren’t.

But because meaningful progress requires us to examine what we’ve done, acknowledge what hasn’t worked, and consider what we can do differently.

The War on Drugs has shaped generations of lives, families, and communities.

It’s time to ask whether we’ve been fighting the right battle.

Listen. Learn. Question. Share.

Because changing the conversation is often where changing the system begins.

🚩 KNOW THE RED FLAGS. RECOGNIZE THE WARNING SIGNS. YOU COULD SAVE A LIFE. 💜

Let’s talk about something uncomfortable. Because sometimes the conversations we’d rather avoid are the very ones we need to be having.

When someone is struggling with their mental health, experiencing suicidal thoughts, or displaying concerning behavioral changes, the warning signs aren’t always obvious. They don’t necessarily announce themselves, and they certainly don’t come with flashing lights and a convenient instruction manual.

Wouldn’t that make things easier?

Instead, we might notice someone withdrawing from friends and family, expressing hopelessness, losing interest in things they once enjoyed, increasing their substance use, or behaving in ways that seem completely out of character.

Here’s what matters: These behaviors don’t automatically mean someone is suicidal or dangerous. They can have many explanations. But significant changes, particularly when accompanied by expressions of hopelessness or threats of harm, deserve our attention.

And paying attention is only the beginning.

At Unbroken Voices, we believe prevention starts with education, awareness, and the willingness to have difficult conversations before a situation becomes a crisis.

That’s why we’re sharing an opportunity to learn more through MAZE’s Red Flag Recognition Training: 2026 Edition, which focuses on recognizing concerning behaviors associated with potential targeted violence, including school and mass shootings.

This training addresses a different but important area of prevention. Although some warning signs can overlap with those associated with suicidal distress, recognizing su***de risk and assessing threats of violence require different approaches.

Here’s something worth remembering: You don’t have to be a mental health professional to notice when someone is struggling. But recognizing that something may be wrong and knowing how to respond are two very different things.

We need more people who are willing to notice, ask questions, listen without judgment, and connect others with appropriate support.

Because prevention shouldn’t begin only after tragedy strikes.

And while education alone cannot prevent every tragedy, it can help us recognize concerning situations and respond more effectively.

💜 Awareness leads to action. Action creates hope.

💙 A PERSONAL MESSAGE TO OUR UNBROKEN VOICES COMMUNITY

We started with a belief. Today, that belief is becoming something bigger than we ever imagined.

It’s been a while since we’ve spoken directly to our community. Between the podcasts, educational resources, videos, and programs we’re developing, it’s easy to get caught up in creating content and forget something incredibly important.

Unbroken Voices was never about the content. It was always about the people.

The people navigating trauma, addiction, mental health challenges, and recovery. The people who have felt unheard, misunderstood, or judged. The people who have found their way forward and want to help others discover that healing is possible.

You are not simply our audience. You are the reason we exist.

Wendy, Ryan, our Board of Directors, and everyone involved in Unbroken Voices are profoundly grateful for the love and support this community has shown us. Every message, comment, shared experience, and act of encouragement reminds us why we started.

Not because of followers, views, or downloads, but because somewhere, someone may finally feel understood, find encouragement, or realize they aren’t alone.

That makes every hour of work worthwhile.

💙 WE MADE A PROMISE. AND WE INTEND TO KEEP IT.

From the beginning, we promised to keep showing up and to amplify the voices of people whose experiences have too often been overlooked.

Not to speak for them, but to create opportunities for people to share their truth, on their own terms.

We believe lived experience carries extraordinary value. We believe our most difficult chapters do not define our worth, and that the wisdom gained through adversity can become a powerful source of connection.

Your past does not disqualify you from making a difference. Your experiences may be exactly what helps someone else feel understood.

💙 BUILT ON PURPOSE, SUSTAINED BY BELIEF.

Unbroken Voices is a nonprofit built entirely through volunteer dedication. Our leadership team and Board of Directors contribute their time without compensation, and much of our development has been personally funded through savings our founder, Ryan, set aside over the years.

We share this not for recognition, but because we want you to understand how deeply we believe in this mission.

We didn’t wait for perfect circumstances or unlimited resources. We started with what we had, continued learning, and kept building.

And through every challenge, one thing has remained constant.

Our belief that people deserve to be heard, supported, and valued.

💙 NOW, WE’RE INVITING YOU TO HELP SHAPE WHAT COMES NEXT.

As our podcasts, educational resources, and community programs continue to grow, we’re looking for volunteers who want to become part of something meaningful.

Whether your interests include mental health advocacy, recovery support, storytelling, podcasting, technology, community outreach, or simply connecting with others, there is an opportunity for you to contribute.

You don’t need professional credentials, a perfect past, or years of experience.

We’re not looking for perfect people. We’re looking for people who care.

We also promise that volunteers will receive training, preparation, and guidance appropriate to their roles. We want you to feel confident, supported, and valued in the work you contribute.

Whether you have a few hours each month or want to become more involved, your time and perspective matter.

And you will never be expected to share personal experiences with trauma, mental health, or addiction to prove that you belong.

💙 THIS IS YOUR INVITATION.

We don’t want Unbroken Voices to become an organization that simply creates content for people. We want to build something WITH people.

A community where experiences are respected, ideas are welcomed, and every individual has an opportunity to contribute.

Because meaningful change doesn’t always begin with extraordinary resources or grand gestures.

Sometimes it begins with someone willing to listen, someone willing to care, or someone willing to show up.

One voice can start a conversation. One conversation can challenge stigma. Together, our voices can create meaningful change.

If you believe in what we’re building, we’d love to have you join us.

To everyone who has supported us, whether you’ve been here since the beginning or recently discovered our community, thank you.

We promised to keep showing up, keep listening, and keep creating opportunities for voices to be heard.

Those promises haven’t changed.

We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished, but even more excited about what we can accomplish together.

We are more than our struggles. More than our diagnoses. More than the circumstances we’ve survived.

We are people with stories worth hearing, experiences worth understanding, and contributions worth making.

Our voices are stronger together. And our story is still being written.
