Saturday Spotlight
October ~ Post 2
Earlier this summer I spotlighted a book by Jocelyn Green titled “Wedded to War”. This week I am spotlighting the second in the series of Heroines Behind the Lines. This novel is titled “Widow of Gettysburg”.
As a wife of a retired United States Marine veteran I can’t even imagine being a widow and having my farm taken captive by the “enemy”. Liberty’s farm is on the side of the Union but it is being used as a field hospital for the Confederate Army.
Come check out the “Widow of Gettysburg” from the Hamann Memorial Library and find out how Liberty comes to love the “enemy” as she nurses them back to health.

This week I am spotlighting our featured author for the month of October. I am going to build the SUSPENSE for you. It is a male writer who has many CROSS over authors with him. There is a WOMAN’S CLUB who are THRILLED about his MYSTERIES. Did you figure it out yet? It is the one and only James Patterson.
I had no idea James Patterson co-wrote with so many different authors and had so many different series. I remember about 20 years ago there was a series on TV called the Woman’s Murder Club. I loved that show and then it wasn’t due to a writer’s strike. I was so annoyed! Great series that was way too short lived.
Come down to the Hamann Memorial Library and check out one of our many James Patterson novels or any other novel of your choice.

A few weeks ago I noticed I wasn’t seeing any robins when I was in the pool. I was a little concerned over this so I got out last year’s journal because I knew I wrote about the last robin I seen for the season. Yes, I remembered correctly, there were robins still in October. Why did they leave so early this year I wondered? I don’t even have a day that I can say I last saw a robin because I didn’t know the last time was going to be the last time.
The book I am spotlighting this week is called, “Kitchen Table Bird Book” written by John Ham and illustrated by David Morhardt. I am going to be honest the book did not answer my exact question but I love birds and I was able to learn a few facts about other birds in the area. Bird watching has always been a great time-killer of mine especially lounging in the pool. Doing two favorite things at one time what could be better right?
Come on in to the Hamann Memorial Library and check out one of the many books on birds. Maybe you too will find a new hobby.

This week I am in the process of reading “And Then There was the One” by Martha Waters. The title reminds me of an Agatha Christie novel I read a couple of times decades ago and then when I was stir crazy during covid. This book is a cozy mystery which I am becoming very fond of and it’s a bit of a romance as well. It’s NOT the steamy stuff so I can handle this. I was a big fan of Miss Marple in the Agatha Christie novels and the main character, Georgie, in this novel reminds me of Miss Marple with the exception Georgie is only 25.
I love the name of the town, Buncombe-upon-Woolly, interesting huh? This book is set about 100 years ago in a quaint English town. However, 4 murders occurred in this one town in a year. Georgia helped solve all of them. See what I mean about Miss Marple?
If you like a whodunit type mystery come on down to the Hamann Memorial Library and check out “And Then There was the One” by Martha Waters.

This week I am spotlighting a book that is part of a series titled, “The Walk” by Richard Paul Evans. Book 2 is titled “Miles to Go”. It is a great sequel to “The Walk” book 1. In book 2 Alan makes it from eastern Washington to western South Dakota. He meets and helps people along the way. He begins to doubt if he will make the walk. Spoiler alert he makes it this far.
I’m going to digress a few moments. Alan talks about this in the later chapters in book 2, but if you have not visited Crazy Horse Monument in Custer, South Dakota you really need to visit. It is not funded by public funds so work gets done when the funds come in. In 1980 when my husband and I got married it literally was a mountain or big dirt pile if you will. Now, you can visualize the majestic mountain. It is a magnificent majestic mountain! Go see it if the chance comes to you.
Come on in to the Hamann Memorial Library and check out one of our many novels. You will not want to check out this series yet, because it is a series you must read in order and book 1 is checked out. But it is such a great series. It is my favorite series of all time without a doubt!

Last week my husband and I along with his middle sister and her husband traveled to North Dakota to visit the North Dakota Badlands and a few other sights. One of those sights was the newly opened Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library that was just unveiled on the Fourth of July.
I am not going to lie it was overwhelming. There is no way you could visit everything in one afternoon. We did not give it nearly enough scheduled time. I usually write my non-fiction on the last week of the month but since this just happened I am writing it this week. Unfortunately, the Hamann Memorial Library does not have any books on Theodore Roosevelt. With that being said I am going to our trusty Juvenile Non-fiction books and borrowing from them. “The Encyclopedia of the Presidents and Their Times” by David Rubel has 9 pages dedicated to President Theodore Roosevelt. It is well worth the 30 minutes spent reading about our 26th President.
Come on down the Hamann Memorial Library and check this book out or any book of your choice

August ~ Post 5
Usually on the last Saturday of the month I try to write on a non-fiction book. However, when it is a five Saturday month I make it a juvenile non-fiction. Last night high school football started for many of the schools here in Iowa. Today, my husband and I will be traveling to Seward, Nebraska to Concordia University to watch the Concordia Bulldogs host the Waldorf Warriors. Our daughter’s youngest two girls attend Concordia. Leah, the older of the two is a Bulldog cheerleader and Lana, the youngest is a competitive dancer for the Bulldogs.
With that being said, the book I am spotlighting is simply called “Football” by Ray McClellan. I have been watching football since 1972 when the Miami Dolphins went undefeated 17-0 to win the Super Bowl. I never have been a Dolphins fan but I have always loved football. I cheered for football starting in high school and ending my senior year of college. This book can be read in 10 minutes or less and if you miss something you can read it again. Even the most challenged football fan may be able to pick up something new.
Come on down to the Hamann Memorial Library and check out this “Football” book and stay in tune to the how and why of this great fall sport of football.

When I chose “An Unlikely Blessing” by Judy Baer for our action aisle display at the Hamann Memorial Library I had no idea if I was going to like this author. Oh boy! When I read a book I want you to know I read it from cover to cover. On the copyright page it says,…published in the year 2011 by arrangement with Guideposts. Boy howdy, did that make me excited!
When I was a kid I could not wait to go to my Gramma’s house to look at her Guideposts and her Hi-Light magazines. I knew right away I would love this book and I was not wrong!
Alex Armstrong, notice the alliteration, has answered the call to pastor a two-point parish. To me and probably a lot of the readers do not find this odd. A lot of small town pastors have more than one parish. As you know many have three and even four. Anyway, Alex and his nephew Jared made a cross state journey from Minnesota to North Dakota to come to Grassy Valley to be the pastor of two congregations.
Come on down to the Hamann Memorial library and check out “An Unlikely Blessing” to see what this blessing may be or pick out a book of your choice.

This week I am spotlighting a mystery. I would like to say this is what I would call a cozy mystery. It is one that reminds me of a “Murder She Wrote Episode”. Another thing I like about this series is the things that Koko and Yum Yum, Jim Quilleran’s two Siamese cats, come up with. Besides being a cozy mystery it is also very humorous. My type of book, one more thing, y’all know I love alliteration. Thelma Thackeray is an actress who has lived decades in Hollywood and has decided to return to Pickax to retire.
Come on down to the Hamann Memorial Library and check out this book so you can read Lilian Jackson Braun’s, “The Cat Who Brought Down the House” to see what the mystery is in Pickax.
