Today was a good day for the City of Apopka.

After eight years sitting idle, our Lust Road reclaimed water facility is back online—restoring a valuable public asset and adding another arrow to Apopka’s quiver.

This project began through a partnership between the St. Johns River Water Management District and former Mayor Joe Kilsheimer, whose administration helped establish its funding. And with the oversight of our new Mayor, Nick Nesta, today’s achievement builds on that vision and foundation.

In only five months on the job, our new leadership team, city staff and district partners worked together to return the plant to its original design and restart operations.

The facility includes a 3-million-gallon tank, two 10-million-gallon storage ponds, three 250-horsepower pumps rated at 3,500 gallons per minute each, and two 10,000-gallon chlorine tanks. Ponds all cleanup in the cobwebs remain to complete the job.

As a commissioner, I’m proud to see renewed cooperation turn an idle investment into a working resource for water conservation and regional partnerships.

Thank you to everyone who helped bring this facility back to life. This is progress Apopka can build on.

Today, I want thank to recognize and honor one of our own from the Apopka Fire Department who traveled to New York City to participate in the Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk.

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, thousands of firefighters, first responders, veterans and Americans are retracing the final footsteps of FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, who strapped on his gear and ran through the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel toward the Twin Towers after our nation was attacked.

Stephen Siller never made it home that day. He was one of the 343 FDNY firefighters who made the ultimate sacrifice while answering the call to help others.

Having a member of our own Apopka Fire Department travel to New York and walk that same path is something our entire community can be proud of. He isn’t just representing the fire service, he is representing Apopka, Florida, and carrying with him our community’s promise that we will never forget.

To our Apopka firefighter participating today: thank you for representing our city, honoring your fallen brothers and sisters, and keeping their memory alive for the next generation.

May God bless you, all of our first responders, the families forever affected by September 11th, and the United States of America.

🇺🇸 Apopka remembers. We will never forget. 🇺🇸
