Today, May 29, 2026, is National Heat Awareness Day. Beat the heat by staying indoors or in the shade. Also make sure to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and prevent heat related illnesses such as dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Heat illness symptoms to look out for:
• Muscle cramps & weakness
• Heavy sweating
• Cool, pale, clammy skin
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Nausea or vomiting
• Confusion

If you experience any of these symptoms move to a cooler environment and seek medical attention. If symptoms worsen and your temperature exceeds 103° F call 911. To learn more about heat related illnesses and symptoms to look out for visit www.weather.gov/safety/heat-illness

Before heading to the pool or beach, make water safety part of your summer checklist. The Apopka Fire Department reminds residents that preparation is key during National Water Safety Month.

• Have life jackets available
• Keep a first aid kit nearby
• Bring a charged cell phone in case of emergencies
• Swim only in supervised areas
• Make sure everyone in the family learns basic swimming skills

Safe habits in and around the water can make all the difference. Have fun, stay prepared, and enjoy a safe summer.

The Apopka Fire Department, City of Apopka Government, and Apopka Police Department would like to honor the lives and legacy of our fallen military heroes this Memorial Day.

Please Note: City Hall, City Offices, and Utility Billing will be closed on Monday, May 25, 2026 for Memorial Day.

This week, Apopka Fire Department members from Station 4 placed their new brush truck into service.

This addition strengthens our ability to respond to brush fires, wildland incidents, and emergency calls in areas where specialized access and equipment are critical to protecting our community.

Reminder: A Burn Ban is in effect for ALL of Orange County, Florida. A burn ban means that Orange County residents will not be able to have any open fires of any types, including camp fires, bonfires, yard and trash burning, etc. There are some exemptions to this rule, including firework displays that are properly permitted, and cooking on barbeque grills or pits.

The burn ban will automatically lift after the drought index falls below 500 for seven consecutive days. For more information about this burn ban visit www.ocfl.net/burnban

School’s almost out and pool season is here. As we recognize National Water Safety Month this May, the Apopka Fire Department encourages families to make water safety a priority.

• Teach children to always ask permission before going near water
• Never leave children unattended around pools, lakes, or beaches
• Avoid distractions while supervising swimmers
• Secure pools with proper barriers and gates

Constant supervision saves lives. Let’s work together to keep our children safe around water this summer.
