🚨 MOVE OVER. SLOW DOWN. IT’S THE LAW.
It’s National Move Over Day, so here’s your reminder about Wisconsin’s Move Over Law and what you’re required to do when you see a vehicle stopped along the road.
When approaching a stopped law enforcement vehicle, ambulance, fire truck, tow truck, utility vehicle or highway maintenance vehicle with warning lights activated:
➡️ If there are multiple lanes traveling in your direction and you can safely change lanes, move out of the lane closest to the stopped vehicle.
➡️ If you can’t safely move over, or you’re traveling on a road with only one lane in your direction, slow down and maintain a safe speed for traffic conditions until you have completely passed the vehicle.
And there’s an important update to the law: Wisconsin now extends these same protections to disabled vehicles stopped along the road when hazard lights, emergency devices or flares are being used, or when someone is attending to the vehicle and is visible to approaching traffic.
The point is simple. When you see a vehicle stopped along the road, give them space.
A few seconds of slowing down or changing lanes can make the difference between everyone getting home safely and a roadside stop becoming something much worse.
Move over when you can. Slow down when you can’t.
