Tonight, members of AVFD gathered for our monthly fire training, just as Virginia’s fall fire season begins! πŸ‚πŸ”₯

Our crews partnered with our local Area Foresters from the Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) for a joint training session on wildland firefighting operations. Together, we reviewed key tactics and terminology, dozer and hand fire lines, and safe chainsaw operations.

A big thank you to our dedicated volunteer firefighters for coming out, and to the Virginia Department of Forestry for leading a fantastic training session! πŸš’πŸŒ²

🚨 FREE CARBON MONOXIDE (CO) ALARMS FOR APPOMATTOX COUNTY RESIDENTS! 🚨

🏠 Does your home have a working carbon monoxide alarm? If not, the Appomattox Volunteer Fire Department wants to help!

We are proud to announce that we have received a grant through a partnership between the Virginia Fire Chiefs Foundation and NiSource/Columbia Gas of Virginia to provide 30 FREE carbon monoxide (CO) alarms to members of our community.

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas that can be deadly. Often called the silent killer, it can build up inside your home without any warning. Homes with fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, wood stoves or attached garages may be at risk.

❀️ We want to help protect those who may be most vulnerable, especially households that:
πŸ”Ή Do not currently have a CO alarm.
πŸ”Ή Have a CO alarm that is missing, expired or no longer working.
πŸ”Ή May be unable to afford a replacement alarm.

πŸ“‹ Interested in receiving a FREE CO alarm?

Please complete our interest form so we can identify households in need and coordinate distribution. (Link in Comments) Supplies are limited to 30 alarms, and completing the form does not guarantee an alarm.

Our goal is simple: help make sure every family has the opportunity to protect themselves from the dangers of carbon monoxide.

A working CO alarm can provide an early warning and potentially save lives. Let's work together to keep Appomattox families safe!

πŸ™ A special thank-you to the Virginia Fire Chiefs Foundation and NiSource/Columbia Gas of Virginia for helping make this community safety initiative possible. Virginia Fire Chiefs Association, Inc.

πŸ”‹ THURSDAY'S FIRE SAFETY TIP πŸ”‹

🚲 BIG BATTERIES NEED BIG SAFETY!

E-bikes, e-scooters, power tools, and other battery-powered equipment are becoming more common in Virginia homes.

But these larger lithium-ion batteries require extra attention.

⚑ Charge them according to the manufacturer's instructions.

πŸ”₯ Charge them in a safe location.

πŸšͺ Never block an exit or escape route while charging.

🏠 Consider charging larger battery-powered devices outside when recommended by the manufacturer and where they can be monitored safely.

❌ Don't use a battery that is damaged, swollen or showing signs of failure.

And NEVER modify or attempt to repair a damaged lithium-ion battery unless you are properly qualified to do so.

Remember:

A battery that powers your ride or your tools can also power a fire.

Charge safely. Store safely. Stay safe.

AVFD sends our thoughts and prayers to Durham Fire Department and all those affected by this tragic Line of Duty Death.

We are heartbroken to share that Firefighter Andrew Brokes died in the line of duty this morning while searching for victims inside the building at 410 Marly Drive.

Firefighter Brokes, who joined the Durham Fire Department on May 5, 2025, served the Durham community with dedication, courage, and a deep commitment to the residents of the Bull City.

β€œThis is a heartbreaking loss for our department, the family, and the entire community,” said Durham Fire Chief Robert J. Zoldos II. β€œOur thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones and his colleagues, and we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during this unimaginably difficult time. The department is standing with and supporting his family in every possible way.”

Two other firefighters were injured during the incident and were taken to Duke Medical Center. Both have received care and are expected to make full recoveries.

This loss is felt across our entire department. Firefighters step into unpredictable situations every day in service to others, and Firefighter Brokes embodied that calling with honor.

We know our community is grieving alongside us. If you wish to share your condolences or messages of support, they will be received with gratitude by our department and by those who knew and loved Firefighter Brokes.

In the coming days, we will share more information about how we will honor his service and support the firefighters involved in this incident.

Thank you, Durham, for surrounding our DFD family with care during this profoundly difficult time.
