. Sunday October 18th

Wind from the Northeast have decreased over the Angeles National Forest and will transition to winds from the southwest later in the afternoon. However, temperatures and relative humidity will remain warm and dry into Monday.

In addition to our excellent partners at the Los Angeles office of the National Weather Service, we also want to highlight another source of valuable weather and fire intelligence information.

At the Southern California Geographic Coordination Center (OSCC) in Riverside, the Predictive Services group studies the weather, fuel (grass brush, trees) conditions and provides additional wildfire risk analysis to fire agencies. The information they provide is relevant to help firefighters at all levels develop strategic and tactical fire behavior information, predict fire growth, and interpret potential fire characteristics.

OSCC produces a short webcast that offers a quick summary of conditions throughout the area. Matt Shameson narrates today’s webcast, Matt is a Forest Service Meteorologist with predictive services.

This afternoon a commercial vehicle heading northbound on Interstate 5 north of the Templin Highway exit erupted in flames.

Angeles National Forest’s Oak Flat station was part of the first alarm response from the Forest Service and the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Oak Flat Station’s response consisted of Angeles Engine 312, Water Tender 212, Dozer 10 and Fire Patrol 12.

The Oak Flat “task force…” was on scene shortly taking immediate suppression actions and successfully knocked down the fire before it was able to ignite the nearby brush. A large devastating wildfire was averted.

The Alert California Whitaker Peak Camera was swiftly moved to the scene by Angeles Assistant Chief Edward Hesbol giving viewers a “live” view of the fire fight. You might note the camera “shake” due to the very strong Santa Ana winds blowing on the ridge tops.

"It is with deep sorrow that I share the tragic news that on Wednesday, October 14, U.S. Forest Service Wildland Firefighter Kaitlyn “KK” Gallagher of Alexandria, Louisiana, died in the line of duty when she was stuck by a tree while responding to the Broken Creek Fire on the Kisatchie National Forest.

Our hearts are with her family, her crewmates and colleagues and everyone who knew and loved her."

The Angeles National Forest has pre-positioned two Forest Service contracted Bombardier CL-415’s at Fox Field.

The CL-415’s can carry up 1,621 gallons, fly at 207 mph and are amphibious aircraft that skim the surface of a water body, scoop water into the plane’s onboard tank, before dropping water on the fire.

The planes (260 & 262) will augment the Forest Service firefighting fixed wing and rotor aircraft assigned to Fox Field. The base is located at General William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster.
