October is National Bullying Prevention Month. For teachers, school staff, and parents who want to know what schools can do, we pulled together practical strategies at the school and classroom level: clear policies, monitoring the places bullying tends to happen, anonymous reporting, and teaching students how to step in safely or get help.
Parents, these are also good questions to ask your child's school.

Bullying is a significant challenge for in schools today. It impacts students’ mental health, academic success and the overall school climate. There are strategies educators can implement to create safer, more inclusive classrooms and make bullying less likely to occur. ...

When worry shows up, children often feel it everywhere: in their bodies, their thoughts, and their behavior. One of the most helpful tools we can give them is a calm, steady inner voice dialogue.

Self-talk helps children put words to they're feelings, separate anxious thoughts from reality, and build confidence in their ability to cope. With practice, these phrases become familiar anchors they can return to on their own.

Try introducing one phrase at a time during calm moments, then gently remind your child of it when worry comes up. Modeling it yourself ("I'm feeling nervous, and I can take one small step") makes it even more meaningful.

Research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) suggests that roughly two-thirds of children experience at least one significant adversity: abuse, neglect, a parent's addiction or incarceration, community violence, or loss Understanding how trauma shows up in a classroom can help teachers identify behaviors that might be mistaken for defiance but are actually stress responses. Knowing what to look for, and having a few practical responses ready, can make a significant difference in a student's ability to learn and in a teacher's ability to manage a stressful classroom.

Educators can deliver the daily doses of healing interactions that truly are the antidote to toxic stress. And just as the science shows that it's the cumulative does of early adversity that's most harmful, it also shows that the cumulative does of healing nurturing interactions is most healing.

The countdown to the first day can bring a lot up excitement, nerves, even anxiety. A little preparation in the days beforehand can help with the transition.

Three things that help:

🕐 Ease back into structure. Regular meals, predictable afternoons, an evening routine that ends the same way each night. Familiar rhythms give the body less to adjust to on day one.

🍎 Visit the school first. Walking the hallways, finding the classrooms, knowing where the bathroom is — small certainties that shrink the size of the unknown.

💬 Talk about it, and follow their lead. Leave room for the conversation without forcing it. When they do open up, ask what they're hoping for and what they're wondering about, then let whatever comes up be okay.

Starting the year steady beats starting it perfectly. 💛

Negative thoughts visit all of us. It helps to have a plan for when you notice negative thinking dominating your thoughts.

☁️ Picture the thought as a cloud — notice it, then let it drift past.
💭 Ask yourself, "What's a kinder way to view this?"
✍️ Write the thought down, write its opposite underneath, and say that second version to yourself three times.
🎯 Name three things that have gone well lately.
🍨 Each morning, name three things you're looking forward to.

Small, repeatable, and effective with practice. Pick the one that feels most doable today and start there.

And if heavy thinking has become your default setting, a licensed therapist can offer support. Asking for help is a strong move.
