10/16/1970 – The Oracle reports that Interfraternity Council Chairman Wendell Hughey called for the establishment of a Black fraternity because it would promote pride, unity and brotherhood. Don Baker was elected Vice Chair, and Jerry Jackson, Secretary. The members didn’t decide which fraternity to join, but sixty-two students were present at the meeting. Eventually, Omega Psi Phi (members and Sweetheart pictured) became Henderson’s first Black fraternity, chartered on May 12, 1971, and became the first National Pan-Hellenic Council fraternity chartered in Arkansas on a non-Historically Black College campus. Following Omega’s lead at Henderson were the chartering of Alpha Phi Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi in 1973, and Phi Beta Sigma in 1975.
