This is what community is all about. When one of our own is facing a difficult time, Arkansas City comes together.

If you're heading to tonight's Bulldog game, consider bringing a few extra dollars to help support this student and their family. ACHS students will be collecting donations between the first and second quarters.

Our thoughts are with this student and their family.

💜💛 Miracle Minute — Supporting One of Our Bulldogs

One of our Arkansas City High School students was recently diagnosed with leukemia, and our Bulldog family is coming together to show the family that they're not alone.

Between the first and second quarters, ACHS students will walk through the stands collecting donations to help support the student. Every dollar collected will go directly to the family.

No donation is too small, and every bit of support makes a difference.

Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog. Thank you for helping us take care of one of our own!

No importa cuánto puedas donar. Cada contribución, por pequeña que sea, puede marcar la diferencia.

¡Una vez Bulldog, siempre Bulldog! Gracias por ayudarnos a apoyar a uno de los nuestros.

It's Friday, and that means it's time for One Good Thing, our weekly opportunity to share something positive happening in our community!

This week, we're celebrating some great news for the Northwest Community Center Arkansas City, Ks.

The City of Arkansas City, in partnership with Kanokla, has received a $1,500 grant through the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) to support programming at the Northwest Community Center.

The funding will help replenish digital and classroom equipment used in volunteer-led programs, providing valuable resources for the people and activities that bring our community together.

Arkansas City was one of just 33 rural-serving organizations nationwide selected to receive funding through the 2026 FRS Community Grants Program, which awarded more than $151,000 to support projects across rural America.

A special thank you to KanOkla, NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association and the Foundation for Rural Service for making this investment possible.

It's a great example of what can happen when local partnerships come together to support our community.

And that's One Good Thing worth celebrating!

It’s Friday, and that means it’s time for another edition of One Good Thing, where we celebrate something positive happening right here in our community!

This week’s good thing comes courtesy of our Parks Department! Our crew has been busy getting ready for Arkalalah, including the very important job of setting the electrical poles that will keep those food vendors up and running.

And you know what that means … we’re getting closer to funnel cakes, turkey legs, curly fries and all the delicious food we spend the rest of the year dreaming about!

Now it’s your turn! What’s the ONE Arkalalah food you absolutely HAVE to get every year? The one you’ve been thinking about since last October?

Tell us in the comments!

Madison Avenue Roadwork Update

A little Kansas weather has caused a change of plans!

Pearson Construction, LLC is now expected to begin work on the City of Arkansas City’s Madison Avenue Mill and Overlay Project on Tuesday, Oct. 20, weather permitting.

The project will improve Madison Avenue between 8th Street and the Arkansas River Bridge. Work will be completed in phases, so drivers should expect temporary traffic disruptions and delays.

The $273,070 project is funded primarily through the Kansas Department of Transportation, which will cover 90% of eligible construction costs. The City will cover the remaining 10% and any additional expenses.

Thanks for your patience as we work toward smoother roads in Arkansas City!

We’ve loved seeing all the creativity and hard work that have gone into this year’s scarecrow contest, hosted by the Arkansas City Area Chamber of Commerce! Every entry is unique, and they’ve all added something special to our community.

When it came time for the City to join the fun, we wanted to do something meaningful. In keeping with this year’s Arkalalah theme, our display honors City employees who once served our country in uniform and are still serving our community today.

We are proud to recognize:
- Tyler Arrowsmith – Marine Corps
- John Blevins – Air Force
- Cody Bottoms – Air Force
- Gary Bowker – Air Force
- Hunter Broyles – Army
- Frazier Brown – Army
- Joe Camara – Marine Corps
- Joshua Clark – Army
- Leigh Graham – Army
- James Herron – Navy
- Lucas Lyons – Army
- Jonathan Merz – Marine Corps
- Colter Pickett – Marine Corps
- Otey Spires – Army
- Glenn Wiley – Army

Their uniforms may have changed, but their commitment to service hasn't.

October 6 City Commission Agenda Highlights

The Arkansas City Commission’s agenda covered water system maintenance, downtown events, property planning and neighborhood improvements.

💧 Emergency repairs to Well 12
After staff observed the well producing little to no water, emergency work was completed by Layne Christensen Company. Repairs included restoring pumping equipment and cleaning the well to improve performance. The agenda requested acceptance of the work for an amount not to exceed $29,597.

🎉 Downtown Common Consumption Area updates
Proposed changes would adjust the area’s boundaries and extend authorized hours to better align with downtown events, especially Arkalalah. The changes are intended to make boundaries clearer for visitors and simplify coordination for businesses and event organizers.

🏘️ Two property subdivision proposals
• Casey’s General Store Addition: The approximately 4.52-acre property at 3413 N. Summit would be divided into two lots, separating the convenience store from vacant land. The plat also includes additional public right-of-way for Skyline Road.
• Logsdon Estates: The approximately 3.29-acre property at 513 S. Springgate Road would be divided into three lots. The existing home would remain, with two lots available for potential future residential use.

🔨 Housing rehabilitation program clarification
A proposed update to the Community Development Block Grant housing rehabilitation program would clarify that applicable permit fees are waived for program work. Contractors would still need to meet City licensing requirements and pay associated licensing fees. The program supports housing rehabilitation for eligible low- to moderate-income residents within its designated target area.

🏡 Recovering neighborhood cleanup costs
The agenda included special assessments for unpaid costs associated with w**d mowing, trash and rubbish removal, unsafe exterior structure repairs and dangerous structure demolitions. These items address recovery of expenses the City incurred performing the work.
