Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of the summer for some. For others, it’s a solemn reminder to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The Fife and Drum Corps experiences a little of each of these every year. Take a closer look at what our Memorial Day weekend looks like.

Before sunrise on May 21, we joined fellow members of The United States Army Old Guard for the annual “Flags In” tradition at Arlington National Cemetery. Moving quietly through the cemetery grounds, Soldiers placed American flags at headstones ahead of Memorial Day weekend.

For generations, this tradition has honored the service and sacrifice of the men and women laid to rest at Arlington. Each flag serves as a visible reminder that their legacy and dedication to our nation will not be forgotten.

Memorial Day is a time of reflection and remembrance.

Every year, the United States Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps is humbled to perform one of our Nation's most honorable and solemn duties. As part of the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) , Soldiers carry on the tradition of placing flags before every headstone in Arlington National Cemetery.

This weekend, we are especially mindful of the tremendous sacrifices made by these Soldiers and their families — a reminder that freedom is never free.🇺🇸🇺🇸

Listen as the Corps' Modern Trumpet Ensemble pays tribute with a performance of the piece "Guardians of Freedom," composed by Master Sgt. Brooke Stevens.

Congratulations to Sgt. 1st Class Paul Mueller on an incredible achievement at the Col. Darby 40 Miler in Italy! 🇮🇹🏃‍♂️

Held along the shores of Lake Garda and honoring the legacy of Col. William O. Darby and the Rangers of World War II, the 40-mile endurance race challenges competitors both physically and mentally through one of Italy’s most historic and scenic regions.

On April 30, Sgt. 1st Class Mueller not only completed the demanding course— he took 1st place in the Masters Division.

We are proud of your dedication, resilience, and excellence both on and off the field. Congratulations on representing the unit with distinction!

250 years of America. 250 years of community.

Last week, the Corps was honored to perform at the Fort Knox Community Partnership Dinner, held in Hangar No. 1 at Godman Army Airfield on U.S. Army Fort Knox! 🇺🇸

This year’s Gold Neighbor, Irvin Lyons Jr., embodied that spirit. A retired Soldier with 31 years of service, Lyons has continued to give back through scholarships for military youth, mentorship, food bank volunteering, and donating power chairs to veterans with limited mobility. Brig. Gen. Sean Crockett, commanding general of U.S. Army Cadet Command (ROTC) and Fort Knox, presented him with the gold jacket in recognition of his longstanding support of Fort Knox Soldiers, families, and area veterans. 🫡
