Supporting military-connected youth, a Magellan Federal Military Family & Life Counselor (MFLC) noticed that traditional office settings sometimes made it difficult for students to open up, especially those coping with a parent’s deployment.

Drawing on experience and creativity, this counselor invited students to walk together outdoors when possible. The change in environment and gentle movement helped foster trust, allowing students to share more about their feelings and challenges. Over time, students began to seek out these walks, finding comfort and connection in the supportive presence of the counselor.

Consider incorporating movement into conversations—sometimes a simple walk can make it easier to connect and communicate.

Magellan Federal's Director of Human Performance, John Gaddy, attended the Maneuver Warfighter Conference at Fort Benning, GA, from September 15-17, 2026.

The forum brought together military leaders, Soldiers, civilian defense leaders, industry, and international partners to discuss the future of warfare. This year’s conference focused on “The Contested Edge: Readiness and lethality for the next fight.” Topics included training, leader development, doctrine, capabilities, and force modernization priorities. While supporting military-connected children in a classroom setting, a Magellan Federal counselor noticed some kindergarteners struggled to remember coping skills introduced during group sessions.

To address this, the counselor developed simple, engaging rhymes tailored to each coping strategy, making the concepts more accessible and memorable for young learners. As a result, the children responded enthusiastically and showed noticeable improvement in recalling and using these skills, for example, repeating, “Feelings come, feelings go, I’m okay, let it go!” during challenging moments.

Through daily engagement with service members, a Magellan Federal Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Counselor responded to a crisis call from someone in urgent need of medical support. The caller was experiencing withdrawal symptoms after deciding to stop drinking but had no medical oversight or personal support system in place.

The counselor validated the caller's courage in seeking help and worked collaboratively to assess immediate safety needs. Recognizing the medical urgency of unsupervised detox, the counselor coordinated with emergency services to ensure the individual received appropriate care.

By bridging the gap between crisis and medical intervention, the counselor helped transform a moment of desperation into a pathway toward recovery and stability.
