Michael Kunz, a Senior Care Manager at Magellan, shares how his son and daughter-in-law’s military service reflects a family commitment that spans branches, deployments, and years apart.
Adam, a Sgt. 1st Class in the Army, served as a cryptologic linguist in Kuwait and Iraq and later as a drill sergeant. His wife Dana served active-duty tours in the Air Force in Qatar and Afghanistan, left as a captain, then rejoined as an Air Force reservist to take on a more hands-on role. She is currently deployed in Qatar, and Adam is stationed in Colorado.
Married for 10 years, Adam and Dana have spent much of that time stationed apart. Technology has kept them connected across time zones and continents.
Their dedication mirrors millions who have chosen service over comfort. Michael’s wife Deborah witnessed that dedication firsthand when Adam and Dana attended a Veterans Day event at her school.
Two branches. One family. Unwavering commitment.

One Magellan Federal counselor supports families by engaging service members in wellness-focused conversations designed to encourage healthy habits and reduce stress.
This Military & Family Life Counselor (MFLC) developed a simple engagement activity during daily walk-arounds, inviting service members to share one or two actions they planned to take over the weekend to support their wellbeing. The approach created a relaxed, supportive environment where participants could reflect, set intentions, and identify realistic goals.
The counselor encouraged participation, helped clarify ideas, and reinforced the value of small, achievable steps. Service members and leaders responded positively, sharing openly, laughing, and expressing appreciation for the support. Follow-up conversations revealed that most participants made strong efforts to meet their goals and valued the added sense of accountability, which helped them stay intentional and motivated.

“My husband has served 10 years in the Coast Guard, and his dedication never wavers,” says Jenneh Sheetz, a Military & Family Life Counselor (MFLC) at Magellan, reflecting on her husband’s active duty service.
ME1 Charles Hiner hit his 10-year mark with the U.S. Coast Guard on February 2, 2026. This past year brought two PCS moves and a 76-day government shutdown. Through it all, he showed up.
He reported to work every day without complaint, while still directing fellow service members to available resources. He made sure his family was taken care of and never lost focus on his mission.
Over his career, Charles has deployed five times on U.S. and foreign vessels supporting counter-drug operations and earned the Tactical Law Enforcement Insignia.
His example is a reminder that service doesn’t pause when things get hard.
