Did you know that bird feathers and your fingernails are made of the exact same material? 🤯

With roughly 10,000 bird species on the planet, there is an entire world of "avian wonder" waiting to be discovered right here in River Legacy Park.

Our 5th- and 6th-grade campers won't just be bird-watching; they’ll be diving into the high-level science of ornithology—studying everything from avian natural history and complex intelligence to the unique "structure and function" that enable flight.

It’s a week of field research, professional-grade observation, and an optional Friday morning birding trip for those ready to put their new skills to the test! 🔭✨

If you could have any bird’s ability - like the speed of a falcon or the vision of an owl - which would you choose? 🦉⚡️

What if your next walk down the trail completely changed the way you view the world around you?

At River Legacy Nature Center, we believe that true education isn't about memorizing facts from a textbook - it's about hands-on, experiential discovery. During this unique summer camp, our immersive ornithology experiences are pulling back the curtain on the secret lives of our feathered neighbors along the Trinity River.

From mastering the science of bird banding to tracking migratory flyways and from heading out on daily hikes to discovering the intricacies of bird behavior, we are training the next generation of environmental scientists. Best of all? Students will stand face-to-face with live avian ambassadors and learn directly from active field researchers.

Ornithology summer camp dates:
06/08/2026-06/11/2026 or
06/15/2026-06/18/2026

We’ve been trying to reach you about your shell’s extended warranty…

Did you know a box turtle’s shell is actually part of its skeleton?

A box turtle’s shell is made of bone and is fused to its ribs and spine. In fact, a turtle has around 50 bones in its shell alone! The outer layer is covered by keratin scutes - the same material found in your fingernails.

Box turtles get their name from a special adaptation: a hinged plastron (the bottom part of the shell) that allows them to close up tightly like a living box when threatened. This remarkable defense helps protect them from many predators.

Next time you see a box turtle, remember - you’re looking at one of nature’s most incredible suits of armor!

This year, River Legacy Nature Center is celebrating 30 years of discovery, wonder, and wildlife care.

Thirty years of curious kids. Thirty years of wide eyes and whispered “whoas.” They’ve seen it all.

Today, more than 100 resident Animal Ambassadors inspire children and families to discover, protect, and fall in love with the natural world. That work continues because of donors like you.

During National Pet Month, we’re asking you, one of our most dedicated supporters, to make a special gift of $30, $300, or whatever feels right to honor 30 years of wonder and help fund the next 30.

Please GIVE today during National Pet Month: https://www.northtexasgivingday.org/organization/riverlegacyfoundation
