This is the final week to see the "Our Man in Vietnam" exhibit! ⌛

The FREE exhibit features photographs and paintings created by legendary journalist and Fort Worth native, Bob Schieffer!

In late 1965, Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporter Bob Schieffer was sent on the assignment of a lifetime. Schieffer made history at age 28 as one of the first correspondents from a major Texas newspaper to be sent overseas to cover the Vietnam War, both as a reporter and photojournalist. Schieffer was tasked with locating and interviewing service members from Fort Worth and Texas during their deployment in Vietnam, bringing their stories home to loved ones. Ultimately, Schieffer located 235 soldiers from Texas and interviewed dozens of them for the Star-Telegram.

Bob Schieffer speaks at UT Arlington exhibit showcasing his Vietnam War photos Legendary journalist Bob Schieffer spoke at UT Arlington on Feb. 7 about the new exhibit showcasing never-before-seen photos from his time covering the Vietnam War for the Star-Telegram.

Veteran journalist Bob Schieffer was born in Austin and raised in Fort Worth, where he graduated from high school. He went to TCU, got his degree, and then joined the Air Force for three years. After that, he got a job working as a reporter for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. It was the beginning of a meteoric career that saw ended up with him moderating Presidential debates In between, he was the host of "Face the Nation" for 20+ years, the host of the CBS evening news, interviewed every President from Nixon on. He's also won virtually every award in broadcast journalism, including eight Emmys, the Edward R. Murrow Award etc... And, through it all, Bob's inborn Texas friendliness shined through: I always liked him.

Part of Bob's journey involved going to Vietnam in 1965 for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. His assignment was to interview Texans about their experiences. This Monday night, on Feb. 9, Bob will be talking about that at an event sponsored by the great folks at UTA Special Collections on Monday night at UT-Arlington. You can read about it at this link:

I am thinking of going, though it is a 400 mile round trip for me. Maybe I'll spend a day or two in Cowtown afterward.

Here's Bob on the right in Vietnam in a photo with a real "Apocalypse Now" feeling to it. I wonder what Bob thought when he saw that movie 15 years later. Anyway, if you're anywhere near UT-Arlington on Monday night, the opening of the exhibit would be pretty neat to attend.

On Monday, February 9, from 4-7pm, UTA Special Collections is celebrating the opening of its latest exhibition, “Our Man in Vietnam.” The FREE exhibit features photographs and paintings created by legendary journalist and Fort Worth native, Bob Schieffer, who will be attending the exhibit opening and greeting guests!

In late 1965, Fort Worth Star-Telegram reporter Bob Schieffer was sent on the assignment of a lifetime. Schieffer made history at age 28 as one of the first correspondents from a major Texas newspaper to be sent overseas to cover the Vietnam War, both as a reporter and photojournalist. Schieffer was tasked with locating and interviewing service members from Fort Worth and Texas during their deployment in Vietnam, bringing their stories home to loved ones. Ultimately, Schieffer located 235 soldiers from Texas and interviewed dozens of them for the Star-Telegram.

The exhibit includes painted portraits Schieffer created in 2025 based on the photographs he took of Texan soldiers serving in the war and selections from his collection of letters and photographs taken during the Vietnam War.
