Never surveyed D**e Marsh's flying insects before? That's okay, you can just wing it. 🦋

Head out into this thriving wildlife preserve on *Wednesday, October 21* to count butterflies & dragonflies with our partners Friends of D**e Marsh! These gorgeous gliders are "indicator species," their populations reflecting ecosystem health, so keeping track of them is key to conserving the park. Besides, spotting aerial beauties is fun to do anyway! 🤩

No prior experience or specific knowledge required, just your eyes and a sense of adventure! You can use binoculars, a camera, or even your phone to spot airborne dazzlers. 👀📷📱

Need something *moor* to do this weekend?

Our partners Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail could use your help removing litter from Daingerfield Island on Saturday, October 17! The park is popular among boaters, fishers, and picnickers, but so much activity leaves behind garbage that contaminates the Potomac River if not promptly cleaned up.

The Friends will have all the equipment and instructions you'll need, though we highly recommend sunscreen since there's not much shade here.

Yeah, we feel the same way about invasive vines. 😠

Our partners Friends of D**e Marsh have their talons out for non-native plants creeping through the park, and they need help removing them on *Saturday, October 17*! Not just a rare freshwater wetland, D**e Marsh is also a wildlife haven and recreational hub, though nefarious vegetation can overtake and spoil the park for everyone. 🌿👎

Running Ranger loves October! The month of Halloween!

Here, the blue-sky blends with the blue water along the Mount Vernon Trail near Jones' Point and Alexandria, Virginia. I like the cool breeze off the water especially on my 6th mile!

What is that in the water? Is it Chessie? The Loch Ness monster of the Potomac? A couple of strange humps in the water - possible Megalodon from the Miocene era? The Potomac River is known for its Megalodon teeth - especially the southern part, near Stratford Hall.

Keep an eye out for our local "monsters" next time you run the Mount Vernon Trail!

Today, on World Mental Health Day, the Running Ranger wanted to share one of his favorite places with you...

"One of my favorite places along the Mount Vernon Trail stretches from under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, past Jones' Point Lighthouse and down to D**e Marsh. You get some of the best views of the broad expanse of the Potomac River.

If you stand there long enough, you see the innumerable canoes of the Piscataway for whom the Potomac was a key food source and trade route to the Nanticoke, and other tribes. Or you see the sailing ships built in John Hunter's shipyard in the 1700s, the vessels built at Jones Point during World War I, or the tourist excursion boats steaming to Mount Vernon in the late 1800s."

Finding time to spend in your favorite places boosts your mood and creates happy connections! Do you have a favorite spot along the Mount Vernon Trail? Or a place that makes you feel similar to what Running Ranger experiences at his favorite place? Share it with us please!

Traffic on the George Washington Memorial Parkway just south of Fort Hunt Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 8. The lane closures will remain in place 24 hours a day for approximately four weeks. Motorists should expect delays, allow extra travel time, and seek alternate routes particularly during periods of heavy traffic.

Crews need to close lanes to repair a severe bump in the road that poses a safety risk to drivers.

The obstruction is on the southern section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway, just south of Fort Hunt Road and approximately 1,300 feet north of River Farm Drive.

The lane closures extend about 0.4 mile in each direction from the bump and affect only this section of the parkway.

One northbound lane and one southbound lane will remain closed around the clock during construction. One lane will remain open in each direction.
