You may remember an earlier post we made about the adorable Sgt Floopy, a WAC Sgt raccoon who “served” here at Hampton Roads Port of Embarkation with her human Pvt William Bailey. had the brilliant idea to bring Sgt Floopy “to life” at MTA with an adorable raccoon stuffed animal complete with OD green sweater and Sgt stripes. Needless to say, Sgt Floopy was a hit! We enjoyed recreating a few HRPE photos with her. Thank you to for the use of their photos

Another aspect of HRPE we brought to MTA was the WAC Day room, which hosted leisure activities like checkers and letter writing. It also hosted an officers tea with luncheon and cake!

One of the main purposes of the WAC Day in Newport News was to hold a job fair. There were 81 vacant jobs at Hampton Roads Port of Embankment that could be filled by WACs and they hoped to encourage women to enlist. To recreate the job fair, we highlighted Draftsman, Clerk, and Switchboard Operators.

We’re so excited to announce that Hampton Roads Wartime Women won first place for reenactment display in the modern warfare section! We could not be more thrilled!! This year’s display was several years in the making, showing the “WAC Day” held on February 19, 1944 in downtown Newport News. Representing the WAC service members who served here in Hampton Roads was an absolute honor. Thank you to and for joining us this weekend and helping us bring WAC Day to life! And be on the lookout for more MTA photos to come. 😉
