When my son calls, I always answer. Today was no different. My son has been in prison for 11 years. 10 of those have been on death row.
These last couple of weeks have been very hard for him. One of his friends committed su***de and shortly after that he got the news that his little cousin who is just a few months older than his son (12) passed away . It’s been a hard couple of weeks.
It is times like this that I am reminded how good God truly is. You see before my son went to prison we almost lost him. Literally. He had 3 brain aneurysms- 2 had ruptured and had it not been for him being sent to another hospital that was more qualified to evaluate and treat him, he would not be here today. Regardless of his situation, I am thankful that he is here. I am thankful that through it all his story is his testimony. God is good all the time. Even when we don’t acknowledge him or accept him, he is still good.
My son has made mistakes- it’s not my place to judge him. It’s my place as his mother to love him.
Our responsibility as parents of adult children is to love them, and be there for them as much as we can. It took me a while to get this, but I do now and for that I am thankful.
Parents of adult children, especially those incarcerated, don’t forget to love your child. No matter what they have done, love them and make sure they know they are loved by you. I will love my so until I take my last breath and beyond.
