Arlington County is among the most densely populated jurisdictions in the country and has a population that is racially, ethically and culturally diverse. With over 300 uniformed employees and 10 full-time fire stations, the Arlington County Fire Department serves an urban community of 26 square miles of residential, commercial business, highway, Metrorail and military facilities including the Pentagon. We respond to over 23,000 emergency incidents annually. All of our fire engines and medic units are staffed with a paramedic or intermediate capable of providing Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency medical care. We maintain a Hazardous Materials Team, Technical Rescue Team, Bomb Team response and Tactical Medics for ACPD SWAT. Due to our fire protection services, Arlington County has an Insurance Service Office Class 2 Rating, the highest rating in Virginia, which lowers insurance costs for residents and businesses.

🚤 Regional Water Rescue Search and Rescue Drill

ACFD hosted its annual regional Water Rescue Search and Rescue Drill, bringing together agencies from across the region to strengthen coordination, communication, and operational readiness during water rescue incidents.

The exercise incorporated a combination of mannequins and live role players to simulate realistic search and rescue scenarios.

Thank you to all participating agencies for their continued partnership and commitment to regional preparedness:

Arlington County Fire Department (ACFD), ACFD Fire Marshals UAS, DC Fire and EMS, Metropolitan Police Department, Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), Alexandria, Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Prince William County, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County, Loudoun County, and U.S. Coast Guard Station Washington.

Regional training strengthens our ability to work together and respond effectively when lives are on the line.

TRAINING ADVISORY

The Arlington County Fire Department will participate in a joint regional water rescue exercise with fire and rescue partners from Northern Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., October 20–22 from 6–10 p.m.

Residents may notice a large presence of fire and rescue boats on the Potomac River between Daingerfield Island and the Key Bridge during these times.

This is a planned training exercise. Please use caution in the area and be aware of increased emergency response activity on the water.

Today, we remember Captain Archie B. Hughes, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on October 19, 1964.

Captain Hughes and his crew from Engine 4 were among the first firefighters to enter a structure fire at 2362 N. Nelson Street. As they advanced into the attic, they faced intense smoke, heat, and flames while working to protect lives and property. Four additional firefighters were injured while operating at the scene and attempting to rescue him.

We honor Captain Hughes for his courage, dedication, and selfless service to the Arlington community. His sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Yesterday, October 11, we honored the memory of Firefighter William M. Miller, an Arlington County Fire Department line-of-duty death (LODD).

On October 11, 1982, Firefighter Miller was found deceased at his home following his participation in a physical test at Station 9.

We remember Firefighter Miller’s service and sacrifice and honor his lasting legacy. He will never be forgotten.
