During , Higgins Industries of New Orleans (with help from other American factories) built 23,398 Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel, better known today as the Higgins Boat. On June 6, 1944, more than 1,000 Higgins Boats ferried more than 150,000 Allied troops ashore at Normandy, France, in Operation Overlord—the invasion.
Today, one of the few surviving Higgins Boats to participate in the D-Day landings is on permanent display at AUSA's partner, the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
