Before a hoseline ever gets close to a fire, crews drill the fundamentals: holding a charged line steady, managing the kickback, advancing as a team without losing control.

It’s less dramatic than a live burn, but it’s the foundation everything else is built on. Sessions like this one pull in more than just firefighters, with law enforcement getting hands-on too.

Training doesn't end when the drill does. After every exercise, crews gather to debrief: what went right, what didn't, and what to adjust before the next call. That habit of reviewing and improving is just as important as the hands-on skills.

Rope rescue is a skill you hope you never need, but if you do, you need someone who's drilled it until it's second nature. Crews training at our facility practice technical rope rigging and rescue systems that come into play in high-angle, structural collapse, and confined-space emergencies. It's slow, methodical work that becomes fast, confident action on a real call.

Firefighters aren't the only ones who train at our facility. Law enforcement, EMS crews, and local businesses come through our doors too, because when an emergency hits, it takes a coordinated team to respond well, not just one department. Preparing heroes for every challenge means preparing all of them, together.

From vehicle fires to rooftop rescues to what's below ground, our facility is built to simulate almost anything a first responder might face. This concrete trench and confined-space prop lets crews practice technical rescue scenarios that are nearly impossible to train for anywhere else. One more way we're preparing heroes for every challenge.

Cutting a ventilation hole in a peaked roof isn't something you want to learn on the job. At our facility, crews practice vertical ventilation... cutting through decking with chainsaws to release heat and smoke from a structure fire, which buys precious time for search and rescue below. Trainings like this bring departments from across the region to train together at our facility.

There's no substitute for real training. Dubuque County firefighters run live-fire vehicle extrication drills at our facility. This hands-on repetition turns split-second decisions into muscle memory. Proud to give our local heroes a safe place to push their limits so our community stays protected. 🔥

🔥 Real fire. Real conditions. Real-life-saving training.

At the Dubuque County Emergency Responder Training Facility, our firefighters, law enforcement officers, and EMS personnel train in a facility designed to enable firefighters, law enforcement officers, and EMS workers to train under real-life emergency situations while doing so in a safe and controlled environment.

That means the moment an emergency responder is dispatched to a real fire, it's not the first time they've felt the heat, navigated smoke, or made split-second decisions under pressure. They've already been there, on our grounds, in controlled burns, building the muscle memory and confidence that saves lives.

This facility has been a collaborative effort of emergency response entities across Dubuque County since 1999, led by the Dubuque County Firefighter's Association and it wouldn't be possible without the support of our community, donors, and volunteers.

Swipe through to see the facility and some of our recent training sessions in action. 📸
