📍Wilmington, NC
Fort Fisher earned the nickname “The Gibraltar of the South” 🪨 because it was considered nearly impregnable, much like the famous Rock of Gibraltar that guards the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea.🌊
Although the Union failed to take Fort Fisher during the 🪖First Battle of Fort Fisher in December 1864, a much larger force succeeded during the 💣Second Battle in January 1865. Its capture closed the port of Wilmington and dealt a devastating blow to the Confederacy, helping accelerate the end of the Civil War.🇺🇸
