HOW COOL! Elmont Elementary School is now an official Monarch Waystation, meaning their learning garden contains everything needed for each stage of the monarch butterfly life cycle! The citizen scientists will attempt to tag the adult butterflies and report the tags to the Monarch Watch Foundation who will collect data to learn more about the migration of the butterflies!

Recently, third graders visited the learning garden to make observations and sketches during library as part of research project and will use their observations during art to create a monarch butterfly! Way to go, Cardinals!

CELEBRATING OUR PRINCIPALS! October is National Principals Month, a time to thank our school leaders for their dedication to our students, faculty, and staff! Over the course of October, we’re spotlighting our 24 principals. Next up is Mary Townes of Kersey Creek Elementary School! Ms. Townes, a Virginia State University alumna, is in her fifth year as principal at KCES!

We asked each principal the following: If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?

Here’s Ms. Townes’ response: "Some years ago, I learned that very close family members on my mother's side were and still are a part of Gee's Bend Quilt Makers out of Boykin, Alabama. Their work tells many stories and is sold and displayed in museums all over the country. It would be amazing to have this skill and continue their rich tradition that began in the early 19th century. "

Please join us in thanking Ms. Townes for all she does for Kersey Creek!

CELEBRATING OUR PRINCIPALS! October is National Principals Month, a time to thank our school leaders for their dedication to our students, faculty, and staff! Over the course of October, we’re spotlighting our 24 principals. Next up is Jon Patterson of Oak Knoll Middle School! Mr. Patterson, a Longwood and VCU alumnus, is in his second year as principal at Oak Knoll!

We asked each principal the following: If you could instantly master any skill, what would it be and why?

Here’s Mr. Patterson's response: "If I could instantly master any skill, it would be playing the guitar. I've owned a guitar for nearly ten years, and despite several attempts to learn, I've never been able to truly master it. Instantly mastering the guitar would allow me to fulfill a personal goal that has been on my list for years."

Please join us in thanking Mr. Patterson for all he does for Oak Knoll!
