A Community that Cares!

A huge thank you to Capece Land Solutions LLC for helping the fire company move our historic bell! Your generosity, time, and support helped us safely relocate an important piece of Hanover County history.

The historic bell represents the proud tradition and dedication of the firefighters who came before us. The bell, purchased in 1895, was used to alert Ashland firefighters for generations of an emergency! It now sits proudly on display in front of the firehouse!

Thank you for supporting our fire company and being such a great part of our community! Capece Land Solutions is a local, firefighter-owned company that specializes in land projects.

If you want to see the bell in person, the AVFC Open House is this Saturday from Noon until 3:00 PM!

What a Great Weekend!

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to the Junior League of Richmond Touch-a-Truck event this past weekend! We loved seeing so many families from the community come out to explore the trucks, equipment, and emergency vehicles.

The smiles, excitement, and great conversations made the day one to remember!

A special thank-you to all of our firefighters, first responders, volunteers, and community partners who helped make the event such a success. We appreciate your continued support!

We’re already looking forward to the next one! 🚒🔥

Congratulations to Firefighter William Palmore, who was named the Doswell Ruritan Club Volunteer Firefighter of the Year.

William Palmore is a 35 year veteran of the Ashland Volunteer Fire Company, beginning his volunteer career with AVFC in January of 1991 at 18 years old. He was quickly promoted to Lieutenant in 1992 and selected as Assistant Chief in 1994. In 1997, Palmore was selected as District Chief, overseeing all operational components of AVFC and leading the company for a year. Palmore continued to serve in a variety of leadership roles over the years, most recently serving as Assistant Chief before AVFC ceased having operational officers. Palmore is a released truck and rescue operator and was named Honorary Chief in 2015. He was named Firefighter of the Year by the company in 1991, 1992, 1998, 2023, and 2025, the only individual in the company's 136 year history to receive this honor more than twice.

Palmore continues to provide regular, weekly staffing on Truck 401 and is considered a wealth of knowledge for both volunteer and career members. His almost encyclopedic knowledge of Ashland's district has no doubt ensured fast response to emergencies across the community. He currently serves as Member at Large for the Ashland Volunteer Fire Company, representing membership on the Board of Directors and Life Members.

Palmore is employed by CSX Transportation and lives in Ashland with his wife and three daughters.

Training Today: Stokes Basket Rescue

Our firefighters recently trained on Stokes basket rescues, practicing the skills and techniques needed to safely move patients from challenging or difficult-to-access locations.

Training included patient packaging, basket handling, rope systems, and coordinated movement to ensure our crews are prepared when someone needs help in a difficult environment.

Do you want to see firefighters and our equipment up close and personal? Come out on October 17 from Noon to 3PM for our Open House! This event will be a great opportunity for people of all ages to learn about the fire department, see equipment, and most importantly, have fun!
