The NVFC is a proud supporter of NFPA this . When charging on a plane, keep portable charging devices on the tray table. Do not charge devices in overhead compartments and never charge e-cigarettes or vapes on a plane. If a battery overheats or fails, it is important for the flight crew to be able to respond quickly. Fire is fast. Normally, you may have three minutes or less to escape a home fire. However, If a larger device such as an e-scooter is involved, once it ignites, it can fill a room with smoke in seconds, limiting your time to escape to one minute or less.

Planning ahead saves lives. Create and practice an escape plan with your loved ones to prepare in the case of a fire. Have a Plan A to use your primary exit and a Plan B with an alternate exit as a back up. If you’re unable to escape, don’t forget Plan C — get behind a closed door and call 9-1-1. As a proud supporter of , the NVFC is reminding you to charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail. For more info: fpw.org.

Fire Prevention Day is held annually on October 9 to remind everyone of the importance of fire safety and to honor those who have lost their lives in fires. Cities across the country host events on this day to raise awareness about fire prevention and safety measures.

History
The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (October 8-10) is one of the most famous fires in history. Legend has it that the blaze started when a cow knocked over a lantern in Mrs. O’Leary’s barn. The fire destroyed 17,000 buildings and left 100,000 people homeless. This tragic event served as a wake-up call for fire safety and prevention. In 1925, the United States made Fire Prevention Day an official observance. President Calvin Coolidge declared October 9 Fire Prevention Day to draw attention to the importance of fire safety, especially after a particularly deadly year in 1924.

Interesting Facts
- The first recorded fire in history dates back to around 1400 BC, when two biblical cities were destroyed by fire.
- The Melanophila acuminata beetle waits for forest fires to breed, laying its eggs in freshly burned wood.
- The profession of firefighter originated in ancient Egypt.
