September is National Preparedness Month and FEMA’s Ready campaign this year is “Americans Stand Ready,” focusing on resourcefulness and self-reliance. Locally, the Aspen Police Department, along with Pitkin County, Aspen Fire and Aspen Ambulance, are amplifying that message with the APD’s fourth annual Ready and Resilient emergency preparedness event.
Participants will experience a live tabletop emergency scenario that demonstrates how a crisis can evolve hour by hour — and how households and emergency responders may need to adapt as conditions change.

Show up for others by driving and riding predictably!

As the daylight hours get shorter and your commute gets darker, remember to use reflective gear and lights on your two-wheeled transportation of choice. A little extra visibility goes a long way —especially when daylight clocks out early.

In your four-wheeled vehicle, be sure to use turn signals, brake lights, and headlights. They’re simple communication tools, and a clear signal is always more reliable than a good guess. Use them consistently, and avoid sudden stops or lane changes that can catch others off guard.

When everyone knows what to expect, everyone gets where they’re going more safely — and with a little less roadway guesswork. Slow down. Signal your intentions. Say, “Hello!”

Slow & Say Hello! is part of a regional safety initiative to reduce multimodal conflicts and increase safe travel behaviors on our pathways.

Small conversations today can prevent big consequences tomorrow!

Think hosting a teen party is harmless or allowing your child to go to someone else’s to imbibe? Think again.

The choices made at a party can have consequences long after the last guest goes home.

Hosting a party where teens are drinking or using drugs isn’t just a bad idea — it can have serious consequences for your child, your family and you.

And for students: being at a party doesn’t mean you’re protected from the law. Possession, providing alcohol or drugs, fake IDs and impaired driving can have consequences that reach far beyond one night.

That’s why the Aspen Police Department has partnered with the Aspen School District, Pitkin County Healthy Futures Coalition, Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Snowmass Village Police Department and local prevention partners to make sure parents and students know what’s at stake.

Knowledge is power. Go to https://aspen.gov/1813/Parties-and-the-Law for more information.

A bear’s confession: I’m really hungry!
Hi, human friends. It’s me, your neighborhood bear. And I have a small problem…I’m very, very hungry.
I know your garbage smells amazing. I know that bird feeder is basically a five-star restaurant. And I definitely know your car might have a snack hiding inside.
But here’s the thing: please don’t feed me.
If I learn that humans = easy food, I’m going to keep coming back. And once I figure out where the good stuff is, I can get pretty determined. Garbage cans? Challenge accepted. Cars? Worth investigating. Houses? Well… let’s just say I have excellent motivation.
I’m a bear. I’m supposed to find my food in the wild — not in your kitchen.
So please help me stay wild:
Lock your doors and windows.
Don’t leave food, wrappers or scented items in your car.
Secure your trash and keep it locked up when possible.
Bring in bird feeders.
And please, please don’t feed me — even if I look cute and hungry.
Because the best version of me is a wild bear who keeps his distance from people.
Thanks for looking out for me. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have some berries to go find.

Staying dirty in the drought
If you’ve seen our patrol cars looking a little … dusty this summer, there’s a reason.
The Aspen Police Department has been holding off on washing our patrol vehicles all summer to do our part during the city of Aspen’s Stage 3 drought restrictions, which have been in effect for months. Every drop counts, and we’re proud to conserve water alongside our community and allow certain areas like our parks to get irrigated.
So yes, our cars are dirty. But they’re dirty for a good reason.
Even our patrol cars are doing their part to keep Aspen’s water use down!
