Dear AUSD Community,
At Atascadero Unified School District, we believe every student deserves to feel safe, supported, and welcome at school. We recognize that recent news and concerns surrounding immigration enforcement may create uncertainty and anxiety for some of our students and families. Please know that we take these concerns seriously and remain committed to ensuring our schools are safe, welcoming environments where every student can learn and thrive.
Over the past several months, AUSD has taken proactive steps to prepare our schools and staff to respond appropriately to situations involving immigration enforcement, consistent with California law and our responsibility to protect the rights of students and families. These efforts have included:
• January 2026: We began providing training to District administrators regarding immigration enforcement at school sites, including appropriate response procedures and the legal protections afforded to students.
• February 2026: I shared a message with families reaffirming our commitment to student safety, well-being, and access to education. That communication also included the California Attorney General's Know Your Educational Rights guide as a resource for families.
• March 2026: We provided additional training and guidance to school principals, including clear procedures and response flowcharts that remain available at every school site. Additionally, on March 3, 2026, our Board of Trustees adopted Board Policy 1445, Response to Immigration Enforcement, further formalizing the District's expectations and procedures.
While these efforts began earlier this year, our work and commitment continue. We will remain attentive to developments, ensure our staff understand their responsibilities, and maintain established procedures designed to protect student rights while complying with applicable laws.
As a public school district, we have both a legal and an educational responsibility to ensure that every student has access to a safe, supportive learning environment. Regardless of the circumstances taking place beyond our schools, our focus remains on the students and families we serve and our responsibility to provide a quality education for every child.
Above all, I want our families to know that every student matters, every family is valued, and every child deserves the opportunity to learn in an environment where they feel safe, respected, and supported. These commitments reflect who we are as a District and will continue to guide our work.
Thank you for the trust you place in AUSD and for the opportunity to serve your children and our community.
Thank You,
Dr. Tom Bennett
Superintendent
